The spaO gene produces two variants (SpaOLarge and SpaOshort) that cooperate to assemble the T3SS sorting platform. We show that SpaOshort docks to the N-terminal region of SpaOLarge and integrates into the platform. Not essential, but critical for efficient effector secretion.Small protein, big role.
