The next #KingTides are Dec. 4 and 5, as well as Dec. 6 in southern California and some northern California locations. Help us document these highest tides of the year by safely photographing beaches, marshes, and flooded roads. Do it on your own or join a community event! coastal.ca.gov/kingtides

Gargantuan Great White Spotted at Famed CA Surf Spot (Video) A very large great white shark was seen swimming beneath the Malibu pier, just a few hundred feet, from the crowded lineup.

β€œWhen you think about how many people are in the water in [SoCal] on a daily basis… and there are dozens of cases every day, when a white #shark is swimming underneath the surfer, yet still, bites are really rare… They don’t see humans as food.β€œ

Once abundant in California waters, the sunflower sea star was nearly wiped out by sea star wasting disease. The cause wasn't clear at first, but one culprit has been identifiedβ€”a bacterium named Vibrio pectenicida. This finding may help scientists understand and control this disease.

It took me 55 years to visit Alcatraz. Here’s what I learned when I finally went President Donald Trump’s idea to reopen Alcatraz prison is ridiculous for many reasons, but high among them: It’s a tremendously successful tourist destination, PeterΒ Hartlaub writes.

I'll be 55 on Saturday. It's literally my job to explore San Francisco and pass on my finds to others.

And up until last month, I had never visited one of the two most renown landmarks in the city.

I finally checked out Alcatraz. Was it worth the wait?
