It definitely takes a few plays to get things to solidify in your brain, but I think it's a game worth your time! It's a vibes/ do what you can kinda game.
From what I have read it seems you always have to keep an eye out for a church win.

If you like Root you should try the COIN series that inspired it! Vijayanagara, People Power, and Gest of Robinhood are great games! From the designer of Root Pax Pamir 2e is a lot less complex then Root but is a tight and brutal game that is well regarded!

Wherlegig is producing a game called Hell Raisers that fits this bill!
Good read! I also think its fair to confirm crits in something like Burning Banners over a d20 game since in Burning Banners you still are more than 50% more likely to crit when rolling and confirming a D8 vs a D20. 33% chance to double damage seems pretty strong and probably is a good choice.

19 3d printed hexagon tiles with little magnets to keep everything together
