I hate that there are such tragedies happening with kids and adoption. I have two adopted cousins (adults now) who are both very happy and have been in our family since they were days old. They’re ours. Always have been.

My point is that we should have done better. Instead we allowed them to fester and come back.

Then perhaps we should have addressed it differently. Perhaps we should have held the landowners accountable for their rapes and murders. Or forced them to take financial responsibility for their illegitimate children. Put government resources into that level of accountability.

Rank and file soldiers aren’t the focus of the statement. The top brass and the administration are the ones who were guilty of treason. But slaveowners definitely should have lost their property to their slaves. Ownership of humans is wrong.

Instead, we allowed the Klan to exist. We let them build statues of traitors to our nation. We let them destroy our values and denigrate our system with the continued use of racism and xenophobia. We gave them oxygen and they took it all.

We failed to do the right thing as a nation when we were easy on the confederacy. They should have been executed. The landowners who owned slaves should have lost everything and had to surrender their land to their slaves. We didn’t do enough to make sure that they didn’t come back.
