These are great until we get blizzard conditions. Defrost cycle keeps the coil free of ice buildup but not the openings around the unit. Operating with about 10% of airflow.

Good on ya. Many of these folks are not there by choice. Mental health issues, dependence problems, etc. It's fine to say "Why don't they just get help?" but it's rarely that simple.
