We are a small community of LGBTQIA+ refugees currently trapped in a settlement in South Sudan. Most of us fled persecution in our home countries, thinking we were running toward safety. Instead, we found a different kind of hell. We are starving, we are terrified, and we are being hunted within the very walls that were supposed to protect us. βThe hunger is the first thing that greets you every morning. Due to massive aid cuts and our isolation, food is almost non existent for us. We often go days without a single meal. While other refugees can sometimes find work or move freely to trade, we are forced to stay hidden in our tents. To leave is to risk our lives. We are essentially prisoners of our own identities, watching our bodies grow weaker every day because we cannot safely access the meager food distributions without being harassed or physically blocked. βThe violence here is targeted and relentless. Our transgender sisters and brothers bear the heaviest burden of this hate. Because they cannot "hide" who they are, they are the first to be attacked. Just last week, one of our trans friends was stoned while trying to collect water at the common pump. They were called "demons" and told they don't deserve the water that "real" people drink. Our tents have been slashed, our few belongings stolen, and when we turn to the camp authorities or police for help, we are often met with more abuse, extortion, or told that our "lifestyle" is the cause of our suffering. βLiving as a transgender person here means living with a target on your back. There is no medical care for the wounds from these attacks, and there is no safe space to sleep. We stay awake in shifts at night, listening for the sound of footsteps outside the canvas of our tents, wondering if tonight is the night they decide to "cleanse" the camp of us. We are human beings who just want to live, to eat, and to breathe without fear. Donate here to support. https://4fund.com/sd9trv
We are forgotten, but we won't give up. Weβre raising funds for basic grains, water, and medicine for those beaten. Even a small donation saves a life.
