To the Editor: Re "State Terror Has Arrived," by M. Gessen (column, Jan. 27) and "Grief, Whistles and Bad Dreams" (news article, Jan. 31): The memories we give our children. I was just 4 years old, a little girl in Amsterdam, when I tried to run over to pick up a doll for a little girl my age who had dropped it on the sidewalk as she and her parents were being dragged out of their apartment by men with guns. My dad pulled me back, afraid that I would be loaded into the truck bound for a death camp with that little girl and her family, who were deemed "other."
was not quite 7 when men with guns broke into our apartment and held my mother at gunpoint while they dragged away the foster sister we were hiding. I learned not to talk about those experiences of terror until I had established an adult life in the United States, where 1 could raise my children and grandchildren in the democratic freedom of a shared humanity that recognized the rights and value of all people, of all the children. I did not imagine that some 80 years later, I would be reliving my childhood of armed thugs terrorizing human beings they deem inferior and shooting those who protest and resist. Will a little girl growing up today recall scenes from the streets of an American city that echo my childhood memories of Nazi-occupied Amsterdam? Is this really the culture of terror in which Republicans want to have their children form their memories?

And CBS decided to retain Dr. Peter Attia. I said no. There are worse things than not selling books. Worse things than missing opportunities. The worst thing would be staying silent when victims need us to speak up.
I stand with the victims. They deserve justice. They deserve to be believed. They deserve institutions that choose courage over comfort, truth over convenience. I demand that the abusers and those who enabled them be investigated and fully prosecuted. I demand the full release of the files. The victims have been brave enough to come forward. Has Trump himself repudiated this? I wouldn’t believe him if he did, of course, but is there someone in his circle who can effectively explain to him that he needs to personally say this video was appalling? Or is he just too checked out at this point?
1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.
5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.
Did you know that Trump himself had not posted the video when you defended it? Why would you accuse people who were offended by a racist video of lying about their reactions? What percentage of Trump's Truth Social posts are made by someone else? What percentage of Trump's Truth Social posts are made without his knowledge? How many people aside from Trump have access to his social media account? Who are those people? Which of Trump's other Truth Social posts were posted by someone else? How can anyone be sure that posts under Trump's name come from Trump? Why should anyone believe that this particular post did not come from Trump since it is consistent with his well-reported history of racist remarks and conduct? If people can't be sure any post is his, why should anyone take any post under his name either literally or seriously? What was the impulse for the staffer to make that post? Has the staffer been disciplined in any way? Will the staffer continue to have access to his account? What does it say about Trump's judgment that he would choose a staffer with this kind of judgment to have access to his account? Is the anonymous staffer a hastily invented concoction to which you pivoted once you realized that the story was going to outgrow your attempts to dismiss it? How do you react to the almost universal condemnation of the post? The President's late-night posting sprees are filled with lapses in taste and judgment as well as threats and pronouncements that go nowhere. What does that say about the President's emotional stability? What does it say about the President's honesty? What does it say about the President's credibility? Hasn't your own credibility been damaged by your defense of something widely seen as indefensible? What does it say about you that you were comfortable not only defending the video but attacking those who were offended by it? Doesn't the amount of lying Trump does, and that you do for him, undermine your ability to be trusted on anything?
