(...) clean indoor air through ventilation and filtration, high-quality masks, testing, vaccination, and staying home when sick.
When these protections are used together, they help reduce transmission and protect both individuals and communities.

Every COVID infection adds risk, not protection. The more times someone is infected, the higher their risk of developing Long COVID.
Reducing infections is one of the most important ways to protect long-term health. The Five Pillars of Protection help lower risk by layering prevention strategies:

Join us and Air Support Project on Thursday, March 5th at 12 noon ET / 5pm GMT for a conversation with Becky Ancira Robertson and Amanda Finley on living with Long COVID. They'll talk about how it has affected them, what they've done about it, and what keeps them going.
Look, the fact that my new housecoat is a long black hooded robe is entirely coincidental! π
But, if I had to be in a cult, one whose mandate is protecting the health of self and others is one I'd not be hesitant to join!
In honour of Long Covid Awareness Month, here are 2 asks for fellow Blueskyers
1. Wear an N95 in public to reduce transmission & in solidarity with the millions living with Long Covid
2. Please stand up to large accounts that minimize this illness & who dunk on disabled folks

Lol my brain went to Owl B.S. before I realized it was the politer form of backside that punchlined the joke.
So, not disagreeing with most of this but before that chain of skeets got blocked up, he had made some subsequent posts parallel to yours (replying to same skeet) saying something about his source was the CDC and there was a link posted. I didn't look far enough in to see what link actually was.
My sweet landlady has the worst health radar ever. Literally every time she sees me and I'm feeling extra rough, she'll think I look good and will ask if I'm feeling better. What can I say? I guess consumptive lady is a look I can pull off well! ππ»

March is Long Covid Awareness month, because March is a lot like long covid in that every time you think it looks nice enough to go be active outside, you quickly regret it.
Uggh, damn! But, yeah, accurate. Solidarity from a fellow LC-er
Exactly. Who wins in a hair-splitting argument? It certainly won't help anyone make choices to stay safer against COVID. Words have multiple meanings and need to be taken in context and demanding people use words in a way that regular folks *will* misunderstand is not helping anyone.
What else is choosing to misinterpret something someone said using conversational english when they have explained exactly how they meant the words? Or calling someone antivax for using plain language when they have clearly stated their support for vaccines? It's both unkind and counterproductive.
Someone pointing out that bulletproof vests are not actually bullet "proof" and concluding that you shouldn't treat them as your *only* armour is a totally different thing from someone saying everyone should just go fight nekkid. Again, this friendly fire is only hurting efforts to keep folks safe!
And yet why would you attack someone who was warning people they need to do more than just wear a bulletproof vest because bulletproof is a misnomer? Shouldn't you support their efforts to actually make people safer by pointing out the ways you can cover the "gaps" in the vest's protection?
Again with an example: If my bulletproof vest is not actually completely bulletproof, that's key info! It doesn't mean that I'm saying the vest has no value but it means I'm not going to run willy-nilly into a firefight without dodging.
So, as a regular person wanting to know "Does this protect me?", what's most important is that it does NOT fully protect me. Thus I need to do more than just vaccinate to be safe, which was her point. Using prevent gives a false sense of safety from a very dangerous virus. That's highly problematic!
This is an argument against using "prevent" as a term for regular folks, just to be clear, not an argument against getting vaccinated. Using language that can't easily be misunderstood or misrepresented by bad actors is important. Going after folks just using plain words is pointless friendly fire.
Example: If I sell an invention saying it prevents rain from falling on folks so they go out in the weather with no umbrella, they'd be pissed (and still wet) if it only partly reduced the downpour hitting them. Arguing "Oh but it prevented some drops, therefore prevent is accurate" would not fly!
That seems to be how she's using "prevent". Which is a reasonable *plain language* description. The vax doesn't stop transmission from happening, but it makes it less likely to successfully infect (freshly) vaxxed folks and makes it less likely to kill those folks when they first get sick.
Is this a specialized definition of prevent? In common conversational English, "prevent" and "reduce" do not have the same meaning. I hear prevent, I hear "stop thing from happening". I hear reduce, I hear "makes it not as much/less likely to happen". I think that's what most people would hear.
So someone with measles can spread it before they have symptoms, it can float in the air for hours and years later, they can develop new health complications?
