I left university in 2019 with £49,600 of debt. A few months later, I became an MP and have since received a salary that puts me in the top 5% in the country. 6 years on, the repayments from my salary have brought this total to down to £48,600 - just £1,000 less.

Read @alexpavesi.bsky.social's "Ink Ribbon Red". Really liked "Eight Detectives" when it came out, so I got this when it was released, but for some unaccountable reason took over a year to get around to it. As someone who reads a lot of this kind of thing, I found it as gripping (and clever) 1/2

Oh, thank you so much! And I'd recommend any of Shirley Jackson's books to be honest.

Again: Britain (not just this government but all of the recent ones) has a problem with knowledge work. Fishing, steel are manly proper jobs with a Victorian sense of place and history. Creative industries & HE are treated as secondary; derided or ignored.

Absolutely adore Alex’s deft, brilliantly intricate novels (treat yourself to Eight Detectives or Ink Ribbon Red if you haven’t already) so this has made my Monday.

I've just finished Death at the White Hart, by @chrischibnall.bsky.social, a top-tier murder mystery that is equal parts creepy and compulsive. Out in the UK later this week!

it genuinely sucks that basically nothing on the internet works well anymore. search? barely works. social media? filled with garbage engagement-bait designed to game the algorithm. news websites? pages that refresh at random or so covered in video ads that it’s impossible to read stories

I've been a bit rubbish with #BertVent this year... We've still been doing it, but I've forgotten to tell you what they are.

So we're gonna do a mega-thread!

These are the books I've enjoyed the most in this year. Each day during December, we've given one away!

All of these books are, of course, available to order at bertsbooks.co.uk

We accept National Book Tokens (should you get any in the next couple of days) and you'll get free delivery across the UK.

Exciting.

Ink Ribbon Red held in front of Bert's bookshelves

Ink Ribbon Red by @alexpavesi.bsky.social is another cleverly constructed murder mystery from the author of Eight Detectives.

Don't take my word for it, though, Michael, our resident crime aficionado also loved it.

Email from publisher. Anyone think this is okay ? No, it’s not okay. I’ve spent more money on promo than they’ve sent me royalties. Whereas, the audiobook rights are mine and have paid me way more. This is such a c%nt email.
