I help manage and study fisheries in Wisconsin, with the goal of making fishing better. It would be impossible without federal colleagues, partnerships, programs, funding, and regulations. Here’s a small sampling of what they do. Let’s not discard every cog and wheel without understanding their role

Serious marketing opportunity for a pepto bismol billboard
Would love to see some “big names” in fishing/outdoor media do the same. Scientists certainly have a role in this, but skeptical users of the resource are more likely to be convinced by a fishing guide or tv host explaining how this will affect their ability to fish/hunt/hike/camp/etc. 🐟🐠🎣 #SciComm

Today's #25DaysOfFishmas is the Bluegill. A popular sportfish that makes a tasty meal!
Bluegill and other Lepomis species will likely be one of the winners in a warmer Wisconsin future.
Check out this recent synthesis of NTL-LTER research on invasive species led by NTL PI Jake Vander Zanden. The paper highlights how long-term research on a freshwater landscape can advance our understanding of biological invasions

Oh yes! Bluegills are 2nd most targeted fish in Wisconsin behind walleye. As a group, panfish are only behind the coveted “anything that bites”. Bluegill and bass densities are definitely increasing and size structures improving in many lakes. Lots of great bluegill opportunities on the horizon!
Still incredibly relevant today. Definitely worth the read
