Illustrating Austen will be arriving very soon and will stay for the summer season!
This display will be curated specially for Jane Austen's 250th anniversary, and will be seperated in two parts.
From Elizabeth Knight’s completion of the formal garden in the early 18th century to Edward Austen Knight’s construction of the Walled Garden and Montagu Knight’s addition of the Library Terrace, you will discover how Chawton House’s gardens have been altered over the centuries.

To find one of her most audacious acts, one must carefully examine the 1740 painting of Chawton House by Mellichamp, which today hangs in our tapestry room. In the lower right corner, one can make out a faint inscription: ‘Mary Jane Austen 1819’.

Once upon a time here at Chawton House, our very own Mary Jane Austen, daughter of Jane Austen’s brother Sir Francis William Austen, was not unlikely to commit rambunctious deeds.
She is most famous for her novel Jane Eyre, which she published in 1847 under the male pseudonym Currer Bell. The novel tells the story of an independent young governess who faces numerous challenges while staying true to her values.
#OTD English novelist and poet Charlotte Brontë died in 1855. Charlotte was the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who lived into adulthood and whose works became landmarks in English literature.
