“Hmm. Maybe you ended up exactly where you needed to be,” Ed rumbled back at him, waggling his eyebrows slightly.

“Okay, you got me,” the man said, still grinning. “Though I’m probably a bit overdressed, and this isn’t my home conference. I’ve never been before, and it figures that the first thing I would do is take a wrong turn.”

That made the man throw back his head and burst into a full-throated laugh. It bubbled up from his depths so effortlessly, crinkling up his whole face in the best way. God𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘯 it was cute. Provoking that reaction gave Ed a massive sense of accomplishment.

Ed chuckled. “Easy. One, there’s only two big events going on here this week. Two…have you seen yourself, mate? This whole business”—Ed made a circular gesture that encompassed the sport coat the man was wearing, the laptop bag he was carrying, the coffee cup he was holding—

“Ah, thank you,” the other man replied, gratitude in his voice. But rather than make a move to get to his intended destination, he did a visible double take. “Wait a second.” His tone turned mildly suspicious. “How do you know where I’m going?”

Ed gave a 𝘦𝘩, 𝘯𝘰 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘭 shrug. “Like I said, everyone’s been doing it.” He certainly had the baseline irritation level to prove it. “Your registration desk is down a couple of hallways. Not the most obvious, gotta say.”

“I suppose,” the man said wryly, crouching a bit to peer at it more closely. “If you manage to miss the whole ‘North American Cup’ in capital letters on it.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Ed reassured him. “Not exactly the first person to make that mistake. The words are kinda small in the logo.” Ed pointed down to the front of the booth.

“Nah, mate,” he said, giving him a genuine smile, turning on the charm. “That’s a ways down.” Ed inclined his head in the direction he’d need to go.

The other man grimaced, his whole (solid, wide, tempting) upper body caving in on itself. “Oh no; how embarrassing!”

He looked up for the fiftieth time, ready to put on his Patient Face and use his Patient Voice. But as soon as he saw who was speaking to him—a man, likely around his own age, with a kind, worried face; perfect blond curls (does he use a curling iron? Or have a perm?);

“Excuse me. Is this registration?”

Ed grumbled to himself, rather violently regretting he’d ever offered to hold down the fort for an hour while his crew was working on setup elsewhere.
