that somebody, even someone who committed the most depraved, unspeakable crimes, can be murdered in prison, is a problem. The last inspection of HMP Wakefield found that violent incidents had increased, and that 3 quarters of prisoners reported feeling unsafe at some point of their time there

I was just thinking, it’ll be a very weird 4-3-3, but you could actually go with a back three and use Madueke and Martinelli as wing backs with NΓΈrgaard holding.

I feel like Shaun Goater and Paolo Wanchope have probably given you an idea of the standard of CONACAF-region footballers that he may not live up to.

This looks great, will add to my Black British Activism reading list for our week on music! Also seriously reminding me of the barely codedly racist early 00s Virgin Radio jingles.

Got a new article out today in @jbritishstudies.bsky.social. It's about the ways in which the music press constructed race in late 20c Britain. Open access so do share it around!

Thanks to @leverhulme.ac.uk and @uniofreading.bsky.social for supporting the research.

I really liked the point @gvaughnjoy.bsky.social made towards the end of this episode about the relationship and parallels between post-war American cinema and 1990s Hollywood, something I’ve also found myself pondering recently.

Idi Amin: Lion of Africa (2010) In writing a revisionist account of Idi Amin’s rise to power and expulsion of Uganda’s Asian minority, Manzoor Moghal simultaneously asserted his own importance in the country’s politics and history.

ICYMI: My post on Manzoor Moghal's 'Idi Amin: Lion of Africa', and its revisionist account of the dictator and his place in 1960s & 1970s Ugandan politics, from the perspective of a Ugandan Asian community leader.

All reposts (and subscriptions) much appreciated. x

Britain’s participation in regional security operations with states who are otherwise malign actors might be in our β€˜national interest’ but it’s also the type of political capital that malign action depends upon, unfortunately. The past two decades is littered with evidence of it.

Making it harder for Iran to retaliate in a way that might force the US and Israel to let up, even if it is itself the right thing to do, makes it easier for them to continue their aggression. Reluctance to antagonise the US because of our reliance on them for European security is also enabling.

I also think something we’re really bad at dealing with in understanding foreign policy is the extent to which there are levels beyond wholesale participation in conflicts that enable aggressors in ways that are often uncomfortable or unpredictable.

This is absolutely true, it’s really quite exploitative, basically trading people’s image and feelings as a commodity in broadcast and then social media in a way they themselves do not profit from or have any control over at all.

Though I much prefer him at LCB than CB and if Myles’ future is in centre midfield as it increasingly seems then - I almost can’t believe I’m saying this - we should sign another left back this summer.

We scored an important goal at Forest a couple of seasons ago because Zinchenko took a smart quick throw to Jesus. We would be much more incisive if we did that kind of thing more often rather than let opponents get set, which is assumably partly why Arteta brought in a specialist throw-in coach.
