Stopped by the fabulous @typewronger.bsky.social in Edinburgh for the first time today, met the amazing Tee, adopted a wee origami dragon, & bought zines by Heidi Clark plus a book about Raffaella della Olga, who uses typewriters to create brilliant abstract images. @yalebooks.bsky.social

Daughter of Mother-of-Pearl

Ania Szremski at 4Columns calls Daughter of Mother-of-Pearl "fiercely imaginative and poem-like, though technically nonfiction (speculative nonfiction, perhaps?), essays...[that make] sea snails totally present on the page."

Imagining the rich lives of invertebrates A writer’s evocative meditations invite readers to consider the often-overlooked creatures on their own terms

β€œHow might we thread the needle between devising open-ended questions to learn more and filling in the blanks with images generated by a poetical human brain?”

They Leave to Reach Likeness - Words Without Borders A series of refusals reflects and refracts notions of family, spirituality, and belongingness in Hong Kong writer Ka Yee Lee’s poem.

I’m a guest in the room. β€œYou’re too light”
When you cry, coffee has no right to speak
hats turn blue.

The Endless Self - Longreads Exploring animal life beyond the limits of human understanding.

"I don’t believe the authors mean a Jekyll-Βand-ΒHyde situation or multiple personalities elbowing one another out of the driver’s seat... A mesmerizing & perspective-altering book. Wong’s hypnotic prose challenges us to look differently at ocean life & our relationship with the many quieter species we often take for granted. A love letter to the ocean & an absolute marvel of a book.

Kou Machida is a punk rockerβ€”his discography includes 10 albums. He published a volume of poetry in 1992 and a novel in 1996. He won the 2000 Akutagawa Prize for Rip It Up. Machida's writing has been compared to rakugo story-telling and to the work of early 20th century self-destructive I-novelists.
