Philip I am an elder caregiver, in very rural very red Colorado. All of my clients are veterans in their mid to late '80s or older.
Every single one of them, believe with their whole being, that they are having an actual conversation with Donald Trump in these emails. Every one of them.
New post from me. Here is my personal touchstone for evaluating proposed legislation regarding young people and smartphones, social media, age verification, and potential bans. It's called the Darnella test. Who's Darnella? You already know.

Telling you right now that if this happens, it will include a test run of shutting down the internet, via the National Emergencies Act, the Communications Act of 1934, and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
Dear tech journalists: I don’t know what in the name of Maarva Carassi Andor you are playing at, but from now on if you publish articles on protest safety / privacy /security against surveillance which are full of adtech and location data trackers, you are finished.

Hi Heather Burns, On December 24, 1943, Anne Frank and the other people in hiding in the Secret Annex received a homemade Christmas cake from helper Miep Gies. The cake was decorated with “Peace 1944”. This was not just a Christmas present. In a time filled with fear, uncertainty and lost freedom the cake was also a sign of hope and a longing for peace. The longing for peace remains relevant today. Especially at a time when antisemitism and other forms of group-based hatred are on the rise and peace is far from guaranteed. At the Anne Frank House we are dedicated to teaching younger generations that peace is never guaranteed. We do this through Annes life story. With your help, we can expand our reach.
The fragility of the rule-of-law state Antisemitism, prejudice and exclusion played a major role in Anne Frank’s life. Her life story shows young people how delicate freedom and equal rights can be. The Second World War and the Holocaust demonstrate what happens when the rule-of-law state disappears. This determined the life of Anne Frank and millions of others. A growing distrust in democracy among young people Our research reveals a troubling decline in young people’s trust in the government and democracy. Through our educational programs we’re trying to combat this trend. With these programs we help young people understand why the rule-of-law and democracy are so important.
Democracy is not a given Our lesson materials explore questions and dilemmas around the values and fragility of the democratic societies. The exercise Democracy is everywhere, for example, offers teachers and young people practical tools to deepen their understanding and awareness about democracy. The Democracy or Dictatorship poster supports meaningful classroom discussions on this topic. On top of that, in 2026 we will launch an animated film on this topic to further engage young audiences. Building on these themes, connected with Annes life story, we continue developing new lesson materials, about the Second World War, the Holocaust, Antisemitism, racism and discrimination, and the importance of democracy. We strive to make these materials accessible to as many schools as possible.
You can help us The Holiday season invited us to reflect. It is a time to take a moment and reflect on Anne Frank’s life story, the value of democracy and how we can protect it together. Help us teach young people to learn from the past through our lesson materials. And please donate today. Donate I would like to thank you in advance for you support and on behalf of the Anne Frank House, we wish you happy holidays.
I received a Christmas email from Amsterdam with the subject line “a message to pass on” and it stopped me in my tracks; it should stop you too. This is where we are.

The absurdity of UK policy gets much easier to understand when you remember that most policy suggestions are the outcome of a vendor's sales pitch.

Watching Rolling Thunder Revue on Netflix. I never paid much attention to Dylan, and now I know why. Flabbergasted by the personality cult around the guy (which the film makes uncannily palpable).

For those of you who are old enough to remember this was similar to how the Panama Papers were leaked (a free plugin with a compromised script).

Don't know whether this is new or has been up for awhile. Either way, when the White House creates a hit list of journalists it doesn't like, the free press is in danger. www.whitehouse.gov/mediabias/

PSA: tips to protect yourself from scams on Signal.
Every major comms platform has to contend w phishing, impersonation, & scams. Sadly.
Signal is major, and as we've grown we've heard about more of these attacks--scammy people pretending to be something or someone to trick and abuse others. 1/
New post from me, for UK folks only, on how you need to start preparing for Apple to switch off Advanced Data Protection and the end-to-end encryption of the data you store on it. Like I said, UK only. #SunlitUplands

Album cover for The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion by The Black Crowes, featuring a sepia-toned photograph of the band members standing in a desolate, rubble-strewn street with old cars in the background. The band name appears at the top in yellow Gothic lettering on a brown banner, and the album title is written in ornate script across the centre.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).
It’s also concerning. 1/
ICE has been cracking down hard across the vast expanse of the greater Chicago area, and I wrote a little bit about what you need to understand about what it’s like here now. Plus, I compiled some resources for locals to get alerts and whistles. dansinker.com/posts/202…
So I blogged this, but you can't read it, because my site's been knocked offline, because the post is no 2 on HackerNews. Fucksake Heather, do you ever learn? No.

Democracy and the open internet die in daylight.
For those following this bill, the next step is that an all-male subcommittee will meet to discuss it on November 18. Can’t be having any women involved in discussions of their own bodily autonomy.
