"In two months, they had frozen my account five or six times, so I knew they could freeze my account. So I said, 'OK, I’ll do some nearby deliveries, I couldn’t bike with it, so I had to walk it slowly on Third Avenue. Every time I tried to ride, I would slide and fall. I fell two or three times."

StreetsblogNYC, a Polk Award-winning news outlet covering the movement for better transit, street safety and livable communities, is hiring a reporter to cover law enforcement.

We are seeking an experienced journalist to cover NYPD and the larger law enforcement community’s systemic failure to address traffic safety in the broadest possible sense: how multiple agencies fail to hold reckless drivers accountable; how law enforcement could be playing a more constructive role in protecting the most vulnerable road users; and how, of course, law enforcement routinely flouts traffic laws that the rest of us have to follow.

In short, why is the NYPD, and the law enforcement community at large, so bad at Vision Zero?

The reporter will work approximately two days or more per week out of NYPD headquarters, where they will be expected to build sources within and around the police department and the city’s various district attorneys.

Minimum qualifications
3 years of experience as a working reporter.
NYPD sources.
A proactive approach to journalism and the ability to quickly pivot to breaking news as needed.
A high level of organization and ability to juggle multiple assignments and interviews.
Enjoyment at working in a fast-paced environment.
A knowledge of what Streetsblog does and why it does it.
A strong knowledge of issues relevant to sustainable transportation.
An even stronger understanding of how law enforcement works (or doesn’t) in New York City and beyond.
Lots of ideas!

We live in a rapidly changing journalistic environment. The ideal candidate can use data to both find stories in otherwise innocuous data bases, but also to create interactive components to our stories. But we also rely on traditional shoe-leather reporting, so the ideal candidate has existing sources and knows how to develop more
