Agreed. “Conservation” can be more about control in some societies rather than coexistence

You just need to look at "conservation" for game to answer that question.

"Large carnivores, although not limiting total herbivore biomass, shape community composition and size distribution, and promote spatial heterogeneity in biomass consumption (le Roux et al., 2019; Mas-Carrió et al., 2024)." Not in lil'old England they don't.

The first-ever Business and Biodiversity assessment report provides decision-makers clear evidence on how business depends on nature, how they impact it & what it means for risk, resilience and long-term value.

Interesting article but as I always say “don’t confuse biodiversity [and culturally mediated landscapes] with naturalness and wildness, they’re not the same things.” That said I’m very suspicious of de-extinction just as with domestic proxies.

It’s not an uncommon trope. Have a read at Scribehound. Ok, something of an echo chamber for the “country set” but gives one a flavour. I’m about the only rewilding voice on there …which can be fun!

This is my go-to paper to point out that significant long-distance trade in wildlife is an ancient phenomenon- here macaws were traded from AD 700 from Meso into North America. Advocates of reintroductions of charismatic species based on sparse remains often conveniently overlook the role of trade.

I thought you might be interested in this as is relevant to objection to aims of NR3 - Nature Recovery Trees and Scrub. As you say it depends on location in respect to sensitive GNB areas, but as these maps/conclusions demonstrate native woodland regeneration and GNBs need not be mutually exclsuive.

Australia’s land-use squeeze Mongabay recently launched the Australian Biodiversity Special Reporting Project, which will produce sustained, high-quality journalism on Australia’s unique wildlife, ecosystems, and the threats…

Australia’s land-use change is steadily shrinking and fragmenting native habitat, especially along the east coast and in the north.

Even where land isn’t fully cleared, fragmentation leaves wildlife more vulnerable to fire, heat and collapse — outpacing conservation efforts.
