Of course, I wasn’t advocating for Tarantino, just adding my thoughts to what should or shouldn’t be proscribed for a creator. I completely get that racist language (as well as other taboos) shouldn’t be included in, say, a kids’ show or an episode of Friends, but let ugliness be shown in drama.
Racist characters saying racist things isn’t something any writer should be afraid to show; if murder, rape and interpersonal violence are all acceptable parts of drama, as well as other sorts of slurs (such as misogyny or ableism) then why is that particular slur any different?
I think if you’re treating people with respect that’s the key thing. It’s hard to hear that language we’ve always used has altered nuance to the people it’s about, so I’m open to hearing that. However, I think there’s nothing wrong with ‘lady’, I wouldn’t be offended to be called a gentleman.
Some people just like scolding others and that kind of linguistic policing is a kind of power dynamic. Of course, it’s always wrong to use slurs and some once common terms age badly but I can’t see what’s insulting about referring to a human female as a lady.
There’s nothing wrong with calling a chap a chap and a lady a lady, unless the folk involved don’t identify that way.
To be left dead by attacks is the natural state of the Middle Easterner, while in the Western culture (also Israel somehow) being killed is a major taboo.
