This article clarifies a problem I’ve had with ai. I can enjoy ai and am willing to consider it a valid art form, but it will never have the punctum that an actual photograph has. I should have known Barthes would have the answer.

It definitely reduces my ability to focus. Like you, I leave my phone in another room to avoid this. I also put my phone on Do Not Disturb, set up in a way in which a select few people can still reach me if they call. I basically treat it like a landline back in the day.

It seems to me to elevate humanity and the body: to see the divine within us and to see the divine within the human body (whether we interpret “divine” literally or metaphorically).

I’m fascinated by angel imagery. Angels depicted in art are not biblically accurate. Why, then, this human-like form? Why the nude or nearly nude body?

Cooper’s (now Jockey) released the first men’s briefs on January 19, 1935.

Advertisements like these were common; briefs became an icon of #masculinity.

These ads were made for a woman’s gaze, as women were expected to buy clothes for their husbands and sons. Hence the common father-son trope.
