Hey @pahoehoe.bsky.social look what I have....
I would love an Anthony Award nomination of On Fire and Under Waterβfor the talented 15 authors and the dedicated editorial staff at RHP who poured their all into these stories. This anthology rings with truth, while also being and entertaining, empathetic, & emotional read. Thanks for considering!
Oh friend. This is beautiful. Thank you. β€οΈ
I feel like you needed to see this. Flint loves buttercream.

Lovely prose. Stream of consciousness feel that fits perfectly with the plot. Masterful dialogue. Subplot about the protag's military service that deserves its own novel. But, MC's *hero-ness* is activated in response to an agency-less female's SA & there's sexualized children vibe.

I needed a treat, so I registered for this. Hoping to see some short crime fiction and DC area buddies. Also hoping Art Taylor's session on novel-in-stories helps me fix my current WIP mess.

What is all this new grey hair caused by:
A) teenagers
B) law school
C) the fall of democracy, the destruction of the constitution, and the obliteration of human rights.

I read a lot of dark, but this one gave me nightmares. Bomer so perfectly captures the devastation of a narcissist. The absolute delusion. The destruction left in his path. I couldn't sleep for thinking of the malignant narcissists in my own life. The ending is so satisfying.
Thrilled that On Fire and Under Water is a Finalist for the Best Anthology Derringer Award!Congrats to the other five well-deserving finalists also! This is an honor and Iβm so happy for everyone at @rhppress.bsky.social and our 15 contributors for making this anthology such a great success.
This tickles me. Your wife wins.

I needed something lighter, this did the job. I skimmed a lot of the influencer stuff, and a lot of the MC's decisions were unrealistic, there's a really interesting discussion of privilege here, the ending is delightfully unhinged, and there is almost enough weird/gross for me.
This newsletter is all about the story of our times, and how to write it: buttondown.com/eaymar/archi...

I'm currently obsessed with fragmented novel in stories. (Recommendations welcome.) This one struggled where they all seem to, sacrificing connection to character for twists. Bleak, almost overwhelming grit (particularly m/m SA). A look into the hearts of people with nothing left.

Jay of Papercutz fame recommended this one to me. Historical family dramas are not usually my jam. About who we owe duty, and what happens when we decide we aren't going to be bound? I think of maybe this book is bigger than its own story because of the questions it unearths.

I didn't find this compelling. I didn't care about the characters, and the mystery (did the MC's dad, who now has dementia, kill his siblings 50 years ago?) felt too far from the action of the story for there to be meaningful stakes. I did like the publishing insider stuff though.
Quick trip to Louisville to celebrate BAMS.
Loved hanging with James Markert, @jamesdfhannah.bsky.social @robdsmith.bsky.social @laurelhightower.bsky.social and J Todd Scott
Huge thanks to everyone involved, and to the guy who said I should do stand up, I rode that high all the way home.
I can always find a bookstore.
Thank you Louisville for this excellent 'stay inside and read' weather.
First day, second semester, you know what this means? (I gotta actually do the thing, cause the textbooks are not returnable if unwrapped.)
Against the perfect blue sky backdrop, here is a stunning collection looking directly at the climate crisis. The collection @rhppress.bsky.social features incredible writers with the always amazing @meaganlucas.bsky.social with a heartbreaking story to close. Read and support indie lit!
Thank you, friend. πͺ
Real, real tired of seeing events and panels with only white male authors. Especially only cis-het, 40+, white, male authors. Unless the topic is specific to being white, male, and old? Let's mix it up.
My first baby turns 15 today. So proud, Brodie is smart and kind and going to make the world a better place.
First semester grades came out yesterday. They are kind of a big deal in law school, stakes higher than any other grad program I've been in. I decided to deal with the weight of that by giving myself bangs on Monday. The good news, I did better than I expected. Less good, now I have bangs.

How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu
Totally not my usual thing, this dystopian sci-fi isn't character or even plot driven, but it is compelling and breaks so many storytelling molds that I feel like my own work can't help but be changed in the wake of reading this.
Itβs so cool to start off the new year with a short story published in @reckonreview.bsky.social , one of my favorite short stories magazines! Thanks to everyone at RR for the opportunity to publish in your pages!
