Research SHOWS that these laws have killed kids all over the country, and will continue killing kids. I won’t be part of the problem. If all I can do is cost the state a few bucks reading every appeal and every letter, so be it.
I have had students before who were known for running teachers off, students that made me nervous. This law would give those students legal grounds to come after me, not just my job, but as some sort of child abuser. Which I am NOT.
We won’t even get into personal safety as a nonbinary teacher in the increasingly hostile environment these laws are allowing to develop in our communities.
I just submitted an appeal to the state of texas regarding unemployment benefits in which I cited THE TEXAS ADMINISTRATIVE CODE EDUCATOR CODE OF ETHICS and actual research papers to counter the idea that misgendering and deadnaming trans kids doesn't violate my morals.
My application was denied on the grounds that leaving my job was about preferences and not my safety, health, or morals.
I quit my job in August due to TX 89th Leg SB 12 requiring teachers to deadname and misgender students, as well as banning all discussion of identity and orientation. Nearly two months later, I have not found another job. So after the first month, I applied for unemployment.
