Washington PECO this year will have *both* the 2024 Nobel Laureate @dacemoglumit.bsky.social and the 2025 Clark Medal @s-stantcheva.bsky.social. When I say it’s the best political economy conference around, I’m not being presumptuous — just stating facts… 😉

Extrapolating from this paper www.mbattaglini.com/top-donors, the effect may actually not have been that small. @battaglini.bsky.social

1/ A thread on the madness of Dem fundraising and why it needs to change 🧵
📈 Look at this chart of political fundraising emails I received in 2024:
- 3,212 fundraising emails in total.
- 48 in a single day!
Badgering your supporters is disrespectful, annoying, and, frankly, counterproductive.

What I take from the paper is that the effect of the super-rich may well be large. Exactly because there are various channels of influence beyond the money they contribute to the campaigns. How large exactly for presidential elections? The paper doesn’t say.

8:59am. I connect to the NBER PE zoom session. Not started. Are they running late? Nope. It is just taking place in California this fall. See you in 3 hours.

Opinion | Put ranked-choice voting at the top of your list
There’s no one trick to fix democracy, but this change to how elections are run could help.
Yet another opinion piece in favor of Ranked-choice voting (www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...) If you want to form your own opinion based on the scientific research, read this: effectivegov.uchicago.edu/primers/ranked…
