The most important lesson for professors is that you can take a nice vacation without going to a conference.

Today I’m starting as Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessor) for #AutoML and #Optimization at the Lamarr Institute & @tu-dortmund.bsky.social 🚀

I spent 2.5 great and inspiring years at @lmumuenchen.bsky.social with @slds-lmu.bsky.social , supported by @munichcenterml.bsky.social 💙

A better understanding of overtuning will help the #AutoML community design more reliable optimization and selection strategies, especially in small-data regimes where robustness is critical. 🚀

Our large-scale analysis shows overtuning is more common than we expected, occasionally severe, and influenced by factors like resampling strategy, dataset size, and model class.

We formally define and study overtuning, a phenomenon where hyperparameter optimization improves validation scores but hurts true generalization. In addition, we relate it to (meta-)overfitting and put recent literature in perspective.

🎉 Excited to share that our paper “Overtuning in Hyperparameter Optimization” (with Lennart Schneider & Bernd Bischl) won the Best Paper Award at the 4th International Conference on Automated Machine Learning! 🏆

They present the current state of the OpenML ecosystem and its design and assess how community-curated datasets, tasks, and benchmark suites have powered more than 1,500 studies, advanced machine-learning research, and improved reproducibility. Lastly, they share lessons from a decade of building, maintaining, and expanding OpenML to guide the future of open-science infrastructure for machine learning.
