Tonight, we watched Shiori Ito’s Black Box Diaries at a café near Nezu. She invited us. The amazing film chronicles her fight to expose her rape despite political and police cover-ups. I first met her in 2017, wrote up her struggle for The Daily Beast while major media ignored it

Teaching is an awful profession most of the time for me.
But I had a student cry and hug me today, on her last day of class with me.
She said I was “the best” and she thanked me for using her preferred name as soon as I learned it.
Sometimes, it ain’t too heck.

Students WANT to read. But they don’t connect with class materials sometimes. LET THEM READ!

This is one reason I started teaching a manga class in Tennessee at my university.
The kids obviously want to read, but apparently it can only be the things “approved” by the idiots that don’t and don’t understand crazy concepts like, “context”, “media literacy”, or “cultural differences”.
