βThere is a load of carbon in the Arctic soils. Itβs close to half of the Earthβs soil carbon pool. Thatβs much more than there is in the atmosphere. Thereβs a huge potential reservoir that should ideally stay in the ground."

The ArcticβBoreal Zone is rapidly warming, impacting its large soil carbon stocks. Tundra regions may have already started to function on average as CO2 sources, demonstrating a shift in carbon dynamics. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We (@clocarbon.bsky.social) spend our lives designing non-wealth-extracting, localised economies around the efficient and effective management of biogenic carbon.
Burying biomass/wood in "vaults" goes beyond a level of ignorance that is hard to comprehend.

(How) can we rely on self-regulation of voluntary carbon markets (#VCM)? How can we improve quality of the inherently complicated land of counter-factuals? How can we govern project-based climate action ( better)? The resignation of two experts from the #ICVCM Expert Panel carry important lessons π§΅
I think a lot about community opposition as a major barrier to the climate infrastructure we need, and I'm thrilled to have edited this fascinating deep dive into a small town's battle over biochar. grist.org/health/bioch...
"Just half a pound of the stuff may remove as much carbon dioxide as a tree can". What the f**k does that even mean?
A mature tree removes ~25 kg of COβ/year. This "new powder" is a sorbent with a capacity of 0.96βmmol/g, so that's 0.0096 kg of COβ per 0.5 lbs. You'd need 1305 lbs to equal a tree.

Hi Brigitte, staff here have been involved in the design/build of biochar production technologies and beneficial economic models for more than 30yrs.
These links will take you to two key documents published recently:

βBefore designers can ethically engage in the production of CDR landscapes and infrastructures, they must learn how to navigate these debates and make sense of the ways that CDR will transform the Earthβs landscapes and atmosphereβfor better and for worse.β

Over 80% of carbon credits issued by more than 2,000 projects have a much lower climate impact than they claim, a new meta study finds.
This has serious implications for the voluntary carbon market.
