There are also sandbox sims that are especially useful for this and you can mess around with building or scripting things here if you don't have your own place.

Because most of the things you buy in SL come boxed and you have to unpack them. Some you can just wear to unpack, but some require you to place the object on the ground to get the contents (which you need permission to do in most places or use their rezzing area if they offer one).

But yee, from what I've seen when you rent, there may be usage terms, but I've yet to see anything have a contract that requires you rent for x amount of months like you see in RL. You can rent until you don't want it. You also don't "need" to rent. There are public places that have rezzing areas.

Whereas renting a parcel can be less than $10/mo. depending who the owner is. There are also sims that focus on shopping or hangouts & they can have storefronts you can rent for pretty cheap for selling stuff you've made. SL also has it's own currency (Lindens) that are used to pay for things.

Renting out makes it a lot more affordable for people to have a semi/permanent presence in-world since simply creating a region can cost a few thousand dollars upfront (from what I remember reading long ago) and hundreds every month.

Because a Sim can only have a certain amount of primitives in it (which I think is ~32k). Primitives are basically 3D objects in the world, but it's a bit of an old metric since lots of the new stuff only has 1-2 LI (land impact) towards the prim count, so you can have 240-ish prims/parcel.

So basically in SL you have what are called a Sim or Region, which is a dedicated server that you can rent from Linden Labs (or others, I think). This Sim operates on their grid. Now when you operate a Sim, you can have it all to yourself or you can rent it out into parcels that divvy up the prims.

They gave us time to pack things up properly, which was especially thoughtful. At the moment I'm not sure how much I'll be getting on despite what I've already said, but there are plenty of other places to hang out. Plus we have our good friends, whose house is right next to where ours was. 💜

Also on that note of being on the other day, the pictures were spurred by the fact that we had to let our SL home of many years go. We hadn't really been on in 6+ months & rent was way past due & we were surprised it hadn't been reclaimed yet. Our landlord was really understanding about it though!

So it seems SL may be more feasible than I thought. When I was on the other night, it only used ~500MB, though I did hop through a few regions. I imagine if I don't TP around too much, data use shouldn't be too significant. We've also been doing pretty well at limiting hotspot data usage elsewhere.
