Screenshot of a CBS News article headline that reads: "Most Americans don’t earn enough to afford basic costs of living, analysis finds." The article was written by Megan Cerullo
A new report finds the bottom 60% of U.S. households—or *two-thirds* of the population—can't afford a “minimal quality of life": housing, health care, and other necessities.
"Indicators like GDP and unemployment tell us the economy is thriving. But they don’t reflect the reality of most Americans."

The stories in this book are so familiar. Families staying in extended stay motels. Families unable to enter shelters because they have an adolescent son. Families navigating the “best” way to shelter in their vehicle. I needed this reminder of my why. Thanks @brian-goldstone.bsky.social
In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."
The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.
One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
Hey social work educators who teach policy courses!! I’m looking for readings about policy advocacy - what it is, why we do it (intro/BSW-level). I’ve found some great articles from the early 2000s but feel like I must be missing more recent articles…
This is not an exaggeration: illegally gutting this program will cause Americans to freeze to death in their homes.
What Dr. Kushel said 👇🏻 If there isn’t enough housing, where do we expect people to go? No state has an adequate supply of affordable housing. And my home state of NV rounding out the bottom with just 17 units per 100 extremely low-income households.

Me, a public health person, just sitting over here reflecting on the fact that the US has experienced a 7% increase in infant mortality post-Dobbs.
Like, do you realize what that says about this society from an ethical perspective? That we made policy choices that caused this?

Guaranteed Income is coming to Columbus! Very grateful to the work of Motherful and RISE Together Innovation Institute (don’t think either are on here, but correct me if I’m wrong!)

“If ‘I think, therefore I am’ is true, we are people who are. We are, and we stand on this ground. If you deny us ground, you are denying us our ‘I am.’ Isn’t that negation of our existence? We are here and we are you and we are yours.”

I’m loving the starter packs. Is anyone aware of one for housing and homelessness folks?
Woke up to the publication of the first article from my dissertation! (And happy to have a space to share it again!) We conducted a systematic review of gov’t cash benefit programs for people experiencing homelessness. Turns out, more money helps! link.springer.com/epdf/10.1007...
This! Last week my hometown (Reno/Washoe County) voted to stop a 30-year-old expansion tax that funds public libraries which will lead to losing 23 staff, $1.4 million in the book budget, and $200,000 in technology.
My wonderful publishers at Haymarket Books
and I just made Hope in the Dark a free download for a week And yeah, I know I haven't been around much--three platforms is a lot, and I reach a lot of people on one and read a lot of key sources on the other. www.haymarketbooks.org/books/791-ho...
I feel very proud to be one of many social scientists who have signed this amicus brief to uphold the Ninth Circuit’s decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson. Criminalizing homelessness is inhumane and doesn’t do anything to address homelessness. www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/23...
I’ve never posted an article to a pre-print site before. Is there any reason *not* to do this? I’m getting ready to submit an article for peer review and a community partner asked if there is a way to share it out while it’s under review. Curious what folks think…
Conservative groups have sued to shut down the Abundant Birth Project, which provides 150 pregnant Black San Franciscans a $1,000 monthly stipend
They allege the project illegally discriminates by giving the stipend only to people of a specific race
Super important study here, in part because of their operationalization of housing insecure.
What I’ve learned after a conference season on the job market? Bring snacks! If you’re at CSWE and need a snack, let me know!
People experiencing vehicle homelessness make up the majority of the unhoused population in many communities. Safe parking lots offer a safe, legal place to park, but as the Colorado Safe Parking Initiative shares, they are only able to serve 10-20% of people who contact them.
I am so excited to be participating in my first Big Table conversation. Community members are meeting at tables all day across Columbus to talk about all kinds of topics. I’ll be joining in on housing insecurity and homelessness among older adults.
Such a great article on maintaining friendships while on the academic job market. I wouldn’t have made it through without the friendship & support of my cohort. And it did mean applying and interviewing for the same jobs. Lots of great tips on intentional communication and care in here!
Hello! I’m an assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Social Work. I recently finished my PhD at University of Denver. I study community-led/policy responses to homelessness, currently safe parking and guaranteed income for folks who are unhoused.
