In 2024, I had the privilege of visiting Greenland. Not an obvious holiday choice, but one of the most extraordinary places Iโve ever been. The landscapes are breathtaking, but what stays with me most is the strength, pride and warmth of the people who call this remarkable island home.

A large geodesic dome radar tower stands against a clear blue sky. The dome is mounted on a metal lattice structure with multiple platforms. In the foreground, a barbed wire fence and dry grass are visible. Another smaller dome can be seen in the distance.
Researchers at ICARUS, Maynooth Universityโs climate research centre, have launched a new citizen science project, seeking help to rescue African weather data that is vital for research about a part of the world that is very vulnerable to climate change.

pressure and wind gust field from the ECMWF model for Friday 18Z showing very strong winds for northern half of Ireland
Met Eireann warnings will presumably drop any time now. Still a way off and this is more uncertain than the usual being a post-tropical cyclone but if this ECMWF forecast verifies the norther half of the country is in for a rough old Friday afternoon and evening
Irelandโs mild climate is shaped by a powerful ocean current system. Dr Gerard McCarthy and a group of scientists highlight how the Atlantic between Ireland and Canada is behaving in unusual ways, making it the only region on Earth showing this pattern.

Another lovely peat core this time from Thorne Moors! So far we have collected over 60 cores on this project over the last few months, which is quite an achievement.
Excellent from Ben Jennings...
Nigel Farage should be taken to Spain and Portugal and asked to explain to the residents there that Net-Zero doesn't matter.

In far less pleasant news -- it turns out that @devoevomed.bsky.social, @nicrawlencenz.bsky.social & I have all been targets of on-line smear articles, all in reference to our public criticisms of de-extinction.

obviously I would never* do anything so vulgar as to repost praise, but can I just say a massive thank you to all of you who have sent supportive comments and messages. It is very heartening, so thank you
Right, now I am off to watch Jurassic Park with my son
Yay! Super exciting. The only part that is amazing is waiting until 2029.
We've just published a paper on human occupation of the NW European margin and the importance of local climate reconstructions during the Lateglacial period. The paper represents a lot of work by myself and my coauthors over many years, we're all happy to see it published at last rdcu.be/eusdJ
What a marvellous idea ๐

I'm from the Highlands of Scotland and this is the most northern town in the UK represented on #ShowYourStripes day. That 1976 drought, that was so strong in my childhood memory, was but a fraction of the more persistent heat we see today ๐ฅต

Taking a good look at Mount St. Helens from the north east
Looking at her from the east, near the โMullineauxโ section that captures her recent history of abundant eruptions, several much larger than 1980

Mount St. Helens is, in my opinion, one of the most amazing volcanoes in the US. This eruption was both tragic and scientific gift, an inspiration to many to learn more. Me included. I love going to visit her, with my geology friends, as she still has many stories to tell us. ๐๐งชโ๏ธ
