In 2024, I had the privilege of visiting Greenland. Not an obvious holiday choice, but one of the most extraordinary places Iโ€™ve ever been. The landscapes are breathtaking, but what stays with me most is the strength, pride and warmth of the people who call this remarkable island home.

Researchers at ICARUS, Maynooth Universityโ€™s climate research centre, have launched a new citizen science project, seeking help to rescue African weather data that is vital for research about a part of the world that is very vulnerable to climate change.

Met Eireann warnings will presumably drop any time now. Still a way off and this is more uncertain than the usual being a post-tropical cyclone but if this ECMWF forecast verifies the norther half of the country is in for a rough old Friday afternoon and evening

Is the Atlantic ocean's "wobble" a warning for Ireland? The Atlantic between Ireland and Canada, which gives us our mild climate, is behaving strangely and is the only location on the earth's surface that has cooled

Irelandโ€™s mild climate is shaped by a powerful ocean current system. Dr Gerard McCarthy and a group of scientists highlight how the Atlantic between Ireland and Canada is behaving in unusual ways, making it the only region on Earth showing this pattern.

Critics of de-extinction research hit by mystery smear campaign Several researchers who have been critical of Colossal Biosciencesโ€™ plans to revive extinct animals say they have been targeted by online articles trying to discredit them

In far less pleasant news -- it turns out that @devoevomed.bsky.social, @nicrawlencenz.bsky.social & I have all been targets of on-line smear articles, all in reference to our public criticisms of de-extinction.

Ireland set for extreme cold if Atlantic current collapses, new study suggests Study looks at a future without the Amoc, which gives northwest Europe a benign climate

"Hearing these numbers can be shocking and worrying. There is no doubt that the risks associated with an Amoc collapse would be large for Ireland.โ€

Mount St. Helens is, in my opinion, one of the most amazing volcanoes in the US. This eruption was both tragic and scientific gift, an inspiration to many to learn more. Me included. I love going to visit her, with my geology friends, as she still has many stories to tell us. ๐ŸŒ‹๐Ÿงชโš’๏ธ
