#OnThisDay in 1938, American evolutionary biologist Lynn Margulis was born. Margulis is most known for developing and popularising the endosymbiotic theory, which explains how eukaryotic cells evolved organelles from simpler prokaryotic organisms that resided within another and became incorporated.

New in JB: Weiss, Tamayo et al. describe a very cool microbial interaction wherein Enterococcus faecalis, an opportunist found in the inflamed gut, impacts phase-variation noted by chaining & rough colony morphology of C. diff.

Congrats to @carolinamicro.bsky.social for leading this study! We looked at genome rearrangements over short evolutionary timescales. Among other things, we found that genomes are highly syntenic within most species. However, several bacteria experienced sudden and massive genome rearrangements.
