The final part of the story: "The arduous path to obligate asexuality in Daphnia" is out in #ProcB π₯³ royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article.... 1. Instead of comparing long-established asexuals to sexuals, we generated new asexual lineages to observe the transition in action.

Est-ce que une francophone me dit le traduction correct pour "continuous, categorical, discrete" , et aussi "response variable, predictor variable"? Je veux trouver les mots corrects pour un cours de statistiques. Merci ;) π²π«π

Editorβs Note: Retraction of article containing fabricated quotations
We are reinforcing our editorial standards following this incident.
That deception is going to work until suddenly it catastrophically doesn't, and the damage to your professional reputation is done.

Watching colleagues & students increasingly running to AI, outsourcing scientific research they've deprioritized (over chasing grants, clout, trying to be further along in career or appear more knowledgeable than they actually are).

AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage | Cory Doctorow
AI is asbestos in the walls of our tech society, stuffed there by monopolists run amok. A serious fight against it must strike at its roots
βif the AI misses a tumor, this will be the human radiologistβs fault... Itβs their signature on the diagnosis.
This is...an βaccountability sinkβ. The radiologistβs job is not really to oversee the AIβs work, it is to take the blame for the AIβs mistakes."

End of an Era
A major chapter in the drug war is ending in Texas, not with a bang, but with a whisper. After 18 years of untold numbers of highway stops and undercover busts of mostly small-time pot and cocaine dea...
Debates around abolishing ICE remind me a lot of dynamics around ending Texas' drug task force network (employing 700 undercover narcs, + support staff) after the Tulia scandal. Disdained by other LEOs, scorned by the public, they became isolated and got their $$ axed. ICE is headed down that path.

TY! βΊοΈ One of my biggest life lessons from that 7-year campaign was that nobody *really* knows what's possible till you try.
Brings to mind a phrase my great grandfather, an XIT Ranch cowboy, repeated often: "There's never been a horse that can't be rode, never been a cowboy can't be throwed." :)

Wow this is amazing to read. I was so young when these programs were terrorizing people. It's refreshing to have a reminder that these things can be fought. Thanks so much for your work , that's quite an impact to have on so many people's quality of life. Great read.

They loved having their own HTML book, it was worth taking the extra time to layer that skill on top of others during a busy, short (3 week) course. I am proud of the work we all put in.

Goal for next year: like we did in competitive programming (C++) in my high school, a menu of coding challenges to choose from, scored by difficulty level, finish what you can in time slot. It will take awhile to generate that many useful questions (about SDMs, NLS, GLMs, Intro-Bayesian modelling).

This version (0.1) focused on repeating skills they trained on over and over, mirroring different applied R "practice problems" and quiz questions. It was more work to give them practice examples, but they at least had a chance during the exam period to recall how to approach the problems.

I'm exhausted. I just gave my 1st in-person, no internet R exam (they were only allowed R code they created during exercises over the semester, in the form of a personal Quarto book). I hate "speed coding", and always preferred take-home exams. I will miss that, but those days are past.
