for the first few years of owning a nintendo 64, the experience of "playing it" was watching my teenaged sister on the controller while I manned the manual for "tactical information" lmfao. I got very well acquainted with mario 64's renders in particular.

Sonic SatAM and to a lesser extent Sonic Underground let themselves get PRETTY DARK for a kids' show, that's true!

I generally try to not hold them to sega though, they were made in a very different era of liscencing.

the only mario exe i like is mx in mario 85, which uses mario the video game as a medium for the horror as opposed to like, adding the horror into the mario setting if that makes sense.

exe content the riffs off mario doesn't work for me, probably because of how mario generally -cannot- carry that kind of story. There's horror in mario deep lore, to be sure, but idk.

idw did a full on zombie survival arc once, like the edges have to be sanded down a bit for marketing reasons, but sonic is fully capable of carrying these kinds of stories.

and even in exe content that -isn't- interested in contrasting the horror to the standad sonic story fare, using a recognizable friendly face to tell a story of corruption and danger is just very easy to pull off. A cartoon that's slightly too uncanny valley is a very solid foundation for horror.

maybe the reason I like the idea of sonic.exe comes from canon sonic's history with having copycat characters that emulate or challenge sonic's ideals. like, a horrific eldritch monster wearing a hedgehog skin is like. Mephiles. that's just Mephiles. Shadow, Metal, Surge.
