If you are a state or local elected, there is very little you can do about skyrocketing gasoline prices.

BUT there is A LOT you can do to protect your constituents from the impact of the oil price shock:

If you're at the airport and Kristi Noem is doing the ominous little message from the TSA screens, you no longer have to do anything she says. Leave your laptop in the case, whatever.

I live in a college town that is also a retirement town and a lot of times when I assume it's a college student driving recklessly, it's actually a 70 year old driving a giant truck. The college students mostly walk, ride bikes and escooters, or take the bus.

We've had a day to pull a few things together, so here's a thread some more targeted info opposing the potential national book ban just proposed in the House of Representatives.

I've been thinking about the analogy of cars and AI and we should consider the way we let the proliferation of cars ruin our environment, cities, health, etc., because corporations wanted to make your life unlivable without their product. A good analogy but not for the reasons they think.

We may soon have 70 million boomers too old to drive, too car-dependent to stop. As the baby boomer bubble pushes into its eighties, we are driving into a demographic wall.

The demographic reality is unrelenting. What happens when you have 70 million baby boomers pushing 80 and still driving big SUVs on North American roads? A whole lot of accidents waiting to happen. lloydalter.substack.com/p/we-may-soo...

I’ve been talking about Alysa Liu’s story about her quitting skating only to come back and become even better because she did it for herself and this came to me in a dream…

this is the pitch that got so many companies on board and investing in the bubble. This is the naked truth of what capitalists want: pure unhindered income once the annoyance of people needing food, shelter and healthcare is removed. They'll be able to sequester themselves away from us permanently

One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kids’ rΓ©sumΓ©s

Can't stress enough how much the ethos of the library and the ethos of police work differ from each other. You cannot effectively run a library using a police world view.

I watch a lot of sports with my kids so we see tons of ads for gambling. I never let an opportunity pass to say something bad about online gambling and prediction markets in front of them and pray that it sticks in their little heads.
