i mean i’m not in DDSA so can’t really speak to details here but Gonzales was in communication with members of the chapter prior to launch and this comms pretzel seems more of a result of misunderstanding how to appeal to the chapter than an attempt to sideline it. it’d be easy to do the latter

i think you were right to probe this line of questioning and i’m similarly vexed by her answer but i think the snappy headline does paper over some complexity
i think “Gonzales’ membership lapsed” or “Gonzales says many of her policies would be considered socialist but she dislikes labels” would not imply that she just quit her membership when lapses happen both intentionally and unintentionally
headline isn’t really accurate bc Gonzales seems more averse to the label than to DSA itself, but still unfortunate to see an unforced error like this on day 1. Zohran/Bernie/AOC’s success cannot be decoupled from their honesty about being democratic socialists
