Dying is inherent to opera. We get used to it, but the way Tristan takes his time here (almost the entire third act) continues to capture the imagination and stir the senses.

It is, of course, nothing new that big money rules the world, but the intensity of such an observation takes on a whole new dimension when billionaires openly commit themselves to global fascism.
It is striking that much of what originated in the Reagan era is once again eerily relevant and a source of inspiration for interpreting the current times (for example, Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, which was made into a film last year: One Battle After Another).

An opera by Olga Neuwirth & Elfriede Jelinek, staged by Tobias Kratzer. The story involves a King-President obsessed with shit (modelled on Donald Trump) who battles a monster named Gorgonzilla while two vampires comment on the action.
This a severe case of FMO!

The trailer for this production by the Bayerische Staatsoper looks very promising. A stage on which time collapses, where simultaneous epochs and realities unfold at once, where montage replaces linearity. Unfortunately, I cannot find the full performance anywhere...

It has been a long time since I saw Die Soldaten in production. That was in 2010 at the Dutch Opera. A stylistically beautiful, at times fantasy-like design (by Willy Decker) to tell a grim and gloomy story.

I have that Lehnhof-DVD too (beautiful but alas it's a cut version). I saw Die Gezeichneten once in production. A production that left more than a few things to desire but it introduced me to this fascinating opera (and Franz Schreker).
