The meeting was fantastic - urgent yet patient discussions, a diverse & engaged audience, & inspiring speakers. Outcomes: a Food Justice WG & a theme for the Autumn meeting. Well done to co-hosts TUS & @greenfoundationirl.bsky.social! Will there be an annual CJUU Sustainable Food Systems event?? 😉

In the afternoon, we heard from Marie Taylor and farmer, Sean O’Farrell, about hands-on food related education and research projects in TUS, including vertical hydroponic growing projects involving students and the local community. Universities need to learn from farmers, not the other way around!

Eye-opening panel discussion w/ Jacinta Dalton ATU, & Anna Brown, @talamhbeo.bsky.social on university's role & responsibility in changing the food system. Sometime we need to "colour outside the lines" & sometimes we need the courage to draw a new picture. College procurement is a lever for change.

We heard from Ruth Hegarty about how universities can contribute to tranformative food policy 📝, and the inspiring Lisa Fingleton on the Brilliant Ballybunion project, that has brough a community together to grow beans and grow a new model of collective, collaborative community farming 🌿🥬🥕

The Climate Justice Universities Union is at an in-person 🫂 gathering today at the Technological University of the Shannon, talking all about food & food systems 🥕, and how HEIs can contribute to transformative & just change in how and what we eat, how and where it is grown and by whom.

A new Ireland Thinks poll, commissioned by An Taisce, reveals Irish public appear at odds with Government’s application for a derogation from EU Nitrates Directive.

It comes days before a crucial EU vote on the derogation expected on December 9th.

Nitrates derogation Back in the early nineties all across the EU a rule was introduced to protect rivers and streams from agricultural run off. At the last count 7,000 out of 137,000 farms in Ireland had received a derog...

I had the a welcome opportunity to move beyond the standard Punch & Judy media setup to properly look under the derogation hood, & explore why the Government measures are failing our waters & failing our farmers.

So, below is EU President von der Leyen saying that the EU is "not fighting fossil fuels, only emissions."

And here is the Saudi envoy to COP30 saying exactly the same thing.

I'm telling you: climate politics are unified around the lie that we can keep fossil fuels & still deal w climate anyway.

Ireland once again in the dock, for issues that @antaisce.bsky.social & SWAN have long highlighted as being legally problematic.

Amongst other serious issues, this judgement highlights that the arterial drainage act is not compliant with the WFD.

Time to give that archaic legislation the boot!

Scientists are primed to see society's challenges as technical problems - if we can just get more information, we can fix it

But climate & nature are political problems not technical ones, and a technocentric mindset seems to hold scientists back from engaging politically or changing behaviour
