What started as an idea during co-teaching has grown into a beloved project of ours. We’re very thrilled it is now published! 🎉

🔊 Implications

Disengagement, particularly in mobile environments, adds an important piece to the puzzle of non-use alongside #mediaavoidance and #disconnection research, helping us see the full media-use process —from #mediaselection to disengagement. More theory and research is much needed!

💡 The availability of other (non-)mediated activities is crucial for disengagement
💡 In some situations, mobile media disengagement is more effortful than in others

05.11.2025 11:23 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

📌 Key insights

💡 Competing activities, goal achievement, and push notifications emerged as the most prevalent cues
💡Disengagement can but does not necessarily have to be “problematic”
💡 Content-related cues are likely uncommon drivers of mobile media disengagement

📊 Study and findings

Based on these premises and using a one-week event-based #experiencesampling design (118 adults, 1,893 sessions), we identified five disengagement types via multilevel latent class analysis:

1️⃣ Non-self-determined
2️⃣ Self-determined
3️⃣ Priority shifts
4️⃣ Temporary
5️⃣ “Mindless”

🔍We propose three overarching premises for disengagement

⚠️ Cues indicate that disengagement is an option
↔️ Disengagement can mean turning away from a current media activity or toward a new (non-)media activity
💪🏻 Disengagement can vary in effort

🎉 📣 Out now in Communication Research! 📣 🎉

What makes us stop using #media in a specific situation?

A new study by my great co-author @annastockmann.bsky.social and me examines situational #disengagement from #TikTok and #Instagram. 📱 🔚

This year, I am living in a simulation - literally. 🌀

@mscharkow.bsky.social, and I are currently conducting a #simulation study on how users interact with algorithms in short-video environments such as #TikTok. I’ve had two incredible opportunities to share our progress so far.

What content do people watch when experiencing stressors? We matched data donations w/ content descriptions & linked them to diary surveys for an answer! Sadly rejected at #ica25 but proud of this collab w/ @felix-dietrich.de, @aliciagilbert.bsky.social, @leonardreinecke.bsky.social 👉 doi.org/n2z2
