My favorite writerly activity is the Thomas Wolfe house. The house is well-preserved with original furnishings and kitchen appliances, etc, so it can be interesting for kids even if they haven't read Look Homeward Angel yet ;)

People talk about the Pinball Museum but I've never been. Plan to walk around town and visit shops and galleries.

There are trolley tours that take you around and tell you the history of the town - there's a lot of it! including Zelda Fitzgerald's untimely demise - and I think that's worth it too.

The premiere indie bookstore is Malaprop's.

This is my beautiful home town! The main attraction is the Biltmore House, and while it is pricey it is also worth it. Plan to spend most of the day there. In addition to the house, there are gardens and grounds - if you're lucky you might catch a demonstration by the blacksmith.
