This does remind me of one part of the original Walking With Dinosaurs, where the Liopleurodon, at the end of Cruel Seas, suffocated under its own weight on a beach as scavengers waited to feast.

Yeah, you can run an app on your phone that's designed to solve chess, and does what it is designed to do.

The interesting thing though is that culturally, no one really cares. It seems that ultimately we decided computer chess players are a worthless novelty, while human masters are interesting.

The "valley of the whales" as it is better known is a classic locality from the late Eocene of Egypt. Most famously it is place filled with the remains of early whales, Archaeoceti, but it's less straight forward as a piece than one...

(Perhaps clarification - it's possible for a government to be oppressive to its people, and for there to be no justification for America to do what America does)

People forget that it's absolutely possible for a government to be bad AND for American interventionism to be bad. Two things, bad at the same time - escapes the brains of most of the internet.

A large predatory dinosaur, Allosaurus, breaks into a run alongside a shallow pond. Turtles and pterosaurs are seen in the foreground around the allosaur's feet, and stegosaurs and sauropods occur in the far distance. Ferns, cycadophytes and conifers comprise the vegetation.

a Megamastax explores very shallow waters in search of food, it kicks up fine sediment as it swims along

Megamastax is the largest Silurian bony fish found so far. it was only known from a lower jaw bone for many years until 2026 when a full skull was found allowing palaeontologists to find where it may sit in the fish family tree. Its head was incredibly wide at the base but also somewhat flat making it look vaguely like a squashed cone, one of the most interesting features of Megamastax is its tooth cushions which are small bulbs of teeth that were probably used to secure prey in place

an artificial light illuminates an Ornitholestes trying to sleep amongst the branches of a ginkgoale with cf. Eretmophyllum leaves

Ornitholestes is a small theropod dinosaur that is of uncertain relation to other maniraptorans (the group of "bird-like" dinosaurs such as Velociraptor, Gallimimus, Oviraptor, and others), though some evidence points to it potentially being the most basal member of Oviraptorosauria. Ornitholestes―unlike its depiction in Walking With Dinosaurs―did not possess a bony crest on its snout, it had a rectangular snout with a long tail and elongated second digits similar to―but not exactly the same as―dromaeosaurs

cf. Eretmophyllum leaves are a kind of ginkgoale leaf known from the Morrison formation where Ornitholestes is from, they had an overall elongate profile with a variable amount of small lobes at the top but typically three

in a murky ephemeral pond, a Tanyka swivels its jaw around to feast on the abundant algae present in the water, its lower jaw is the only thing in focus. a blurry forest of Calamites can be spotted in the background

Tanyka is a basal-tetrapod from Brazil only known from its lower jaws that suggest it was able to rotate its lower jaws in a novel way, the authors suggest that this feature accompanied by its unique tooth plates could mean it was herbivorous, but they make no definite conclusion

Calamites is a tree sized relative of horsetails which is known from the same formation as Tanyka, they looked vaguely like horsetails growing like cone-shaped spruce trees

an Eosteus swims slightly above the other members of its school

Eosteus is the oldest known well preserved and articulated bony fish. it's known from China and holds a wealth of information about the origins of bony fish and how we can go about researching basal members of Osteichthyes in the future. it appeared unlike any fish today with low-set eyes, large spines infront of all of its fins (save for the caudal fin), with the dorsal and anal fins being held up by the spines, and also elongate rhombic scales across its body

I notice the strong influence of the Sunbittern on the wing patterns of the male Valdoraptor. I really like the composition of this piece, and the dynamic posture of the lead Valdosaurus - very believable as a started animal that doesn't quite know what to do.

A group of easily spooked Valdosaurus encounter a Valdoraptor that is trying to initimidate anyone who gets to close to its partner.

This image was a private commission done for a kind fellow with the surname Vald (hence the choice of the dinosaurs).

So in a letter Tolkien said that LotR ended about 6,000 years before the modern day, and the genes for white skin didn't appear until around 7,000 years ago... which means that if you wanted to be a stickler for "accuracy," Rings of Power should have zero white people.

There probably has not been a greater single obstacle to peacemaking in the last century than the United Nations Security Council, which as constructed manages to both inspire vigilante aggression and be the source of preferential denials of R2P

Trump wants to pick Iran's new leader - will a hostile regime under fire agree? The president's vision of Iran's future could meet fierce opposition, writes chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet.

Why is this being reported as if its a reasonable request? It's a fucking disgraceful outcome. How about if we'd like to pick a new leader for America. Should we bomb them and pick a new one for them?

It used to be incumbent on states to not simply massacre civilians inside their destroyed houses and we have now moved decisively to β€œIf you stay, you die when we destroy your town to rubble”. It was the wars in Iraq and Syria that established that precedent, not the destruction of the Gaza Strip.

A little worldbuilding info card, primarily for my own use, of one of the many animals used as mounts in Kieran's world. Plainsrunners are descended from a roadrunner-like ancestor and feature prominently in the religions and cultures of people on their home continent.
