One of the simplest redirection strategies is to simply paint one side of the asteroid white, and the other black, and let the Yarkovsky effect redirect the asteroid. You need decades of lead time, however.

Hmmm.

Demon core, with fanciful Cherenkov glow

I hear your frustration.
Just relax as you contemplate the cold calm beauty of lambent Cherenkov radiation washing over you.

Scale up a human skull, keep bone density (~1800 kg/mΒ³) and proportions.

It becomes a black hole when its radius β‰ˆ 9Γ—10ΒΉΒΉ m β€” about 6 AU (Jupiter’s orbit).

Mass β‰ˆ 6Γ—10³⁹ kg β€” ~3 billion Suns.

The hollow doesn’t matter. Only total mass inside the outer radius does.

I have had it with Canonical's distortions of Linux in their Ubuntu distro, and am carefully migrating my running dev environment from Ubuntu 24.04LTS to Debian Linux.

And I am using Claude CLI / Opus 4.6 to plan and manage this on a single machine while not disturbing ongoing development.

Shrug, I was there. As you were there, elsewhere. I speak from my community.

PR? Ah.

...I do not expect a return of the likes of the labs where I worked. Sometimes I feel like a 5th century Greek slave in Rome... only accelerated. George Pake will not return.

As a former Xerox PARC researcher I have to say that it's more than "curiosity". The best is a lab where some time is given to unfettered exploration and "delight". At PARC, it was commonly held that "if you aren't failing at least 1/3 of the time, you aren't having a conversation with Nature."

When I do not want to engage with such a god bothering enthusiast I say in my best deep mafia voice β€œYa ne govoryu po-angliyski. Ya govoryu po-RUSSKI!”.

I have yet to encounter anyone who replies in Russian.

Fair enough :-)
Subtlety; re: Kessler - orbiting low enough to ensure a few years to passive deorbit of failed sats, or *debris*, raises the cost of needed onboard propellant for orbital boost, esp. when solar storms raise the exosphere drag height. Plus collision avoidance moves. Sketchy logistics.

11.02.2026 20:25 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The analysis is fairly good. It leaves out a few bits, tho'. One is de-orbiting these sats at the end of their 5 year lifespan. That is a huge mass coming back; not only possible ground debris (new design criterium - make it all burn up), but also upper atmosphere pollution. Another, Kessler.

By 1945 standards the firebombing of Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, etc was considered brutal but lawful warfare. On a strictly legal reading: Air Marshall Harris and General LeMay were not war criminals. THEN.

Post-1949 Geneva Conventions YES.

City busting nukes are criminal. Precision counterforce...

I have cancelled our subscription to the Washington Post. It's not about editorial policy; it's about the cuts to reporting staff - including firing the on-the-ground reporter in Ukraine while she is working with a pen frozen from the cold because of Russian bombardment.

I suggest keeping much of those in a deep freeze, until needed. In vacuum sealed bags.

Emperor Caligula mocked Rome by pretending to be a god and nominating his horse for office; Trump does the modern version, issuing pronouncements elevating the Army Navy game while doubling down in Minnesota.
History is echoing.
