I’m Randall Wheeler, an appellate public defender in Kentucky for 35 years, an advocate for civil and human rights, a proud progressive, a loving dad, a doting pawpaw, and a much tolerated spouse. I post about Appalachia, Kentucky and politics.πŸ¦‹

92,000 jobs lost. That’s families worried about groceries, rent, and the future.

Washington shouldn’t be handing tax breaks to billionaires while working people pay the price. We need leadership that fights for workers, not the wealthy. #KY06

Kristi Noem needed to be fired. Unfortunately, the president wants to replace her with someone who is all hat and no cattle.

Here's my statement.

Public power belongs to the people. Save our TVA! There are signs that the Trump administration may be scheming to sell TVA’s publicly owned assets to private corporations.

When people across the Tennessee Valley came together to build the Tennessee Valley Authority, they weren’t just building dams and power lines β€” they were building public opportunity. Help us remind the TVA board that public power belongs to the people. TVA is not for sale! https://loom.ly/GDF1W2w

Neighbors gathered in Montgomery County yesterday to talk honestly. One message really stuck with me. A person held up a sign that read:

β€œHelping my community and not licking the boots of the 1%.”

That’s it. That’s the heart of this campaign. #FliptheSixth #KY06

Good news from Appalachia specifically the town of Franklin in Western North Carolina the Noquosiyi mound has now been officially returned to our Cherokee kinfolk! It brings me a lot of pride and it fills me with hope as an Appalachian that this has happened.

Central Kentucky doesn’t need a show horse. We need a workhorse. I’ve taken tough votes, built coalitions, and delivered for working families. I’m ready to meet the moment and do the same in Congress. #KY06

Only one of the top five states where hunger is the worst are in Appalachia. One, sadly, is where I live, Kentucky (although only the eastern mountains are in Appalachia).

AR (19.4% food insecurity rate), KY (18.8%), LA (17.7%), TX (17.6%), and MS (17.3%). See the map for childhood hunger rates.

March 3, 1820: Congress debated the Missouri Compromise. Women couldn't vote. But in the mountains of Appalachia, women were already leading their communities. That tradition never stopped. 205 years later, mountain women are still fighting for their families. πŸ”οΈ #WomensHistoryMonth 🧡

A children's hospital is renamed for Dolly Parton and hopes to transform pediatric care in Tennessee Dolly Parton’s name might inspire full-throated sing-a-longs to her working woman’s anthem β€œ9 to 5,” or evoke memories of thrilling days spent at her Dollywood theme park.

β€œDolly Parton Children’s Hospital did not share how much Parton donated as part of the naming announcement. But Matt Schaefer, its president and CEO, said her support would ensure β€˜every child who walks through our doors receives the treatment they deserve.’”
