A new species of fringed gecko, Luperosaurus alvarezi, from the tiny island of Sibuyan (Philippines), was described by Meneses & Brown (2026).

It’s wild to think it took almost 9 years to formally describe this lizard species!

PS. Government should invest more in field-based biodiversity research. And regulatory offices shouldn’t make it unnecessarily difficult for Filipino researchers to secure collection permitsβ€”esp when the goal is to properly document species & deposit specimens in recognized natural history museums.

And now the bar keeps moving; people are asking for more genes, even genomic-scale data.

Imagine the burden that creates for #megadiverse countriesβ€”many of them in the #GlobalSouth β€”where most of Earth’s biodiversity exists and is undescribed, but resources for research are limited.

Jacket design for Darwin and the Queer Origins of Life: A History of Sex and Science by Ross Brooks. It features a historic, drawn image of a gynandromorph gypsy moth, with distinctive female patterning on its left side and male on its right. Against a black background, the image and text (title and author's name) are brightly rendered in a spectrum of colours resonant of the Progress Pride Flag.

My top 10 history of science papers from 2025. You've got material about scientists navigating their academic institutional systems and intellectual frameworks, about how science used the tools available to it to organise reality, and material practices of science.

πŸ“ The anteroposterior molecular blueprint of adult guts is shared across bilaterians
doi.org/10.1371/jour...

Could adult roles of these genes have been informing the evolution of the through-gut and the conservation of its patterning system? πŸ₯ or πŸ₯š?

A) Summary model of the conserved elements of the adult bilaterian through-gut, and their AP distribution, as identified in this work. Modules are color-coded. Slashed rectangle pictogram (blue, topmost): boundary between β€œblock” and β€œgradient” compartments (i.e., β€œtransition sphincter”) as defined in the main body of text. B) Larval bilaterian through-guts. A correspondence between larval and adult AP gut markers (dark arrow) was identified for sea urchin (Sp). The AP patterning of adult bilaterian guts may in turn be a conserved feature of larval through-guts (light arrow). C) Reconstruction (dark arrow) of the possible configuration of the ancestral through-gut configuration, which gave rise to the diversification of adult guts seen in extant species (light arrow to panel A). The authors' interpretative lens would further provide an investigative angle to approach the relationship between the ancestral through-gut configuration and that of its larva and the larvae of extant species (light arrows to and from panel B). A: anterior, P: posterior.

Bilaterian guts share embryonic patterning, but what about the adult gut? This study of 5 species reveals conserved TF modules that define A-P #gut compartments, with lineage-specific modifications, illuminating #bilaterian gut #evolution & diversification @plosbiology.org πŸ§ͺ plos.io/49pgpH3

They also reveal ontogenetic continuity of AP organization: all bilaterian guts maintain "larval" AP patterns into adulthood, even in cases where the gut is reformed during metamorphosis.
