I think the ChatGPT use of “it’s not ___, it’s ___” is more distinct from human use of that phrase than people make it out to be. Because ChatGPT is always making some stupid metaphor that communicates zero information. “It’s not a drizzle, it’s a flood”

It’s been a delight & an education working with @randyallenharris.bsky.social on this paper in @rhetstm.bsky.social POROI on LLMs ability to synthesize rhetorical figures & linguistic constructions. Worth saying nothing I poast should be construed to reflect the views of my employer or supervisor!

A.I. Isn't People How many Reddit posts does it take to learn to read?

Yesterday I wrote about what AI is (math) and isn’t (people) and someone in the comment said it’s the best thing anyone ever wrote about AI. I’m just gonna take that at face value and so should you. www.todayintabs.com/p/a-i-isn-t-...

Every time I read a corrective contrast (“this isn’t X; it’s Y," where Y reframes X), I assume I’m reading an LLM output. People rarely make these blunt recategorizations, yet ChatGPT reaches for them constantly. This isn’t just a stylistic flourish. It’s a confession.

One reason I picked this topic was that I had noted these kinds of constructions were one place where language users tend to get creative and even quite fun. Not so when LLMs do it. It would probably be torture to redo my PhD with material from the 2020s, with so much LLM-produced guff around.

24.02.2026 21:19 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

My PhD was on these kinds of constructions, and I feel like I dodged a bullet by writing it in the 2010s. These constructions are more common than you'd think, but there's just something so artless about the way LLMs deploy them that makes them stick out.

Most of my students are native speakers of Swedish, which sometimes helps enormously with the earlier stages of English. They might even pick up a thing or two about their own language when we try to decipher OE.

This was fun! Understood 1100 for the most part, but basically nothing of 1000.

Not a historical linguist at all (and the history of English was my least favourite class by far in my undergrad) but my current job includes teaching an extensive survey sequence on the topic.

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

- Maailman Kuvalehti Suomalainen koulujärjestelmä ohjaa lapsia suomi toisena kielenä -opetukseen, vaikka he osaisivat suomea erinomaisesti. Järjestelmän on aika muuttua, kirjoittaa Ndéla Faye.

"S2-opetus syntyi avaamaan oppilaille tietä suomalaiseen yhteiskuntaan.

Several people asked if the English suffix '-wise', as in 'otherwise', 'likewise' and 'weatherwise', is like Romance '-mente'.

Yes and no.

'-Wise' used to be a noun too, but it's not the word 'wise' ("sensible").

So unlike '-mente', it has nothing to do with the mind.

'-Wise' comes from ... 1/
