Happy Birthday, Ethel MacDonald. Born in Motherwell on 24 February, 1909, Ethel was a Glasgow-based socialist/anarchist who travelled to Spain when the civil war started. BBC Scotland made this pretty decent documentary - a life worth remembering, for sure. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJDc...
There's a great exhibition on Scotland's brutalist architecture - at Street Level Photoworks until 16 May. (Great to see our album in the shop there, too.) Swing by!
Happy Birthday, Nina Simone - born 21 February, 1933. This performance of classic protest song Missisippi Goddam is incredible - www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ25...

Happy Birthday to Monica Queen! She joined forces with us to sing 'Te recuerdo Amanda', in honour of the great Chilean poet and singer, Victor Jara, who was murdered by Pinochet's right-wing military dictatorship. What a voice! www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ege...
Can Keir Starmer advise how much taxpayers' money was wasted in criminalising Palestine Action. How many millions in police time, in court time? A ballpark figure will suffice. And all to deflect from Britain's shameful role in the genocide in Gaza. Lest we forget. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Putting the pipes to good use! Doff yer bunnet to 21 year-old Jack Duffy who's been inspiring the anti-ICE protesters in the US in traditional manner. Read more at the link below - thanks to Norry Wilson at @lostglasgow.bsky.social for spreading the good news. lataco.com/protest-bagp...
Here's a good (long) read on working-class writing. We've always hoped that the history of Glasgow we create would be a starting point for others to write their own histories. If you've been inspired to do your own writing after listening to our tunes, drop us a line!

Happy Birthday, Alex Harvey! Born in Glasgow, 5 February 1935 - frontman for a few bands, not least The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Their version of Jacques Brel's 1963 song 'Next' (released in 1973) is phenomenal! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqx5...
Quote from Johnny Rodger's review in Popular Communication: "The Tenementals have not only realized what are the possibilities of the critical in pop songβthey have effected it. They use song in making apparent that kaleidoscopic, patchwork history of this city, and thus, they bring it alive."
Many thanks to Johnny Rodger, Professor of Urban Literature at @glasgowschoolofart.bsky.social, for the extensive, complimentary and super-insightful review! radar.gsa.ac.uk/10505/3/Revi...

Time fizzes and skizzes .... three years today we played a Glasgow Strike Solidarity gig in the Admiral Bar. Belle and Sebastian's Sarah Martin brought her sweet vocals to the line-up, as did Lily Mohaupt when we performed Peat Bog Soldiers. We raised Β£2000 for striking workers. What a night!

Striking workers on the picket line
All the best to the workers at Vue Cinemas who'll be going on strike for another month in support of fair pay and working conditions. Get down to the picket line at St Enoch to support them if you can. Photo from BBC online this morning with our David handing out leaflets in support of their case.
Itβs great to see that our video for Peat Bog Soldiers (Die Moorsoldaten) has clocked up 5000 views on YouTube. The song was first performed in August 1933, in a German concentration camp for leftist political prisoners and it's as relevant today as it was then. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaCK...
