Rex successfully snuck out!β¦Until he was trapped after Day 1 of being on his own. Luckily, Rex had a microchip that we were able to scan, and we contacted his mom. While he was there, she gave us the go-ahead to neuter Rex!

FUN FACT FRIDAY (3/6/26): Intact male dogs account for 60-80% of all dog bites. Neutering your dog naturally decreases their testosterone, which often helps with aggression and disobedience.

(8) At the time of her profession, women consistently made up less than 5% in Veterinary medicine from 1940-1960. Dr O'Connor paved the way for more women to enter the profession, especially in large and exotic animal medical practice.

(7) In 1960, the group adopted bylaws and officially became the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians. The American Association of Zoo Veterinarians is still highly esteemed to this day, and provides valuable knowledge and advice to those in the career.
(6) Pat was meeting with 3 other zoo vets when she decided to formalize their sharing of best practices by founding the North American Zoo Veterinarians organization. She became its first president, serving from 1946-1957.
(5) Dr. O'Connor did not gate-keep her discoveries and knowledge of zoo veterinary medicine. She often contacted other zoo veterinarians for advice, and to share what she had observed and learned in her own position at the Staten Island Zoo.
(4) She challenged herself to get to know all of her patients; she kept hundreds of pages of detailed notes of their species, health status, and personalities.
(3) Zoo-based veterinary medicine was a brand new concept; there were no specialized courses or knowledge set aside to teach prospective professionals about this line of work. A lifelong learner, Dr. O'Connor was recorded saying "Animals can teach people a lot."
(2) At first being anticipated to be released from her position after the war ended, the Staten Island Zoo made the decision to keep employing her.
Dr. O'Connor kept detailed notes about all of the zoo's inhabitants, curating special dietary needs and treatment plans for their species.
(1) Dr. O'Connor was the first female full-time zoo veterinarian in the United States, and quite possibly, the first female zoo veterinarian in the United States period. Patricia was hired for an interim position at the Staten Island Zoo in 1942 at the beginning of World War II.

(3) James Evans did not start his career in animal welfare; his initial calling was in creative work, landing a position at a marketing and communications firm.
(2) As the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), Evans has been instrumental in reshaping the narrative around animal welfare to encompass the well-being of both animals and their human companions.
