I remember learning about the Hays Code in film school and how it made it so that any amoral protagonist had to meet karmic justice by the end of the film and going “wow, that’s really silly” and then once a week I log online and see people argue that we need stuff like that now or it’s problematic

I saw an electronic billboard for the Catholic school system my brother and I attended as kids (not an overwhelmingly great experience), and discovered their new slogan is "Your Child, Your Choice".

Oh, the layers upon layers of smdh.

This person, and it was clearly only on the strength of the character’s glasses 😅

I was at a work meeting with a partner agency, and their executive director remarked “I finally figured out who you remind me of…”

It turned out to be a perfectly normal-looking actor from Call the Midwife.

But let me tell you, when she showed me her phone screen, I was fully bracing for Shrek.

My 17-year-old walked in, asked “Why are you watching Brad Pitt: The Movie?” and made me turn it off.

I’m back.

Tobias Menzies is pulling me through.

I tapped out with an hour left. But I will resume viewing, even if it’s in 15-minute increments until I finish.

No one better quiz me on the finer points of this film.

I was going to say “like the main characters’ names”, but then the female lead repeated them three times in ~90 seconds.

There are some nice laundromat aesthetics in the first 10 minutes, here. I’ll give it that.

I gave myself the meaningless challenge of watching all this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees before the awards ceremony, mainly because there are only two I haven’t seen yet: The Secret Agent and F1.

And, damn, why is F1 so long? 2 hours and 35 minutes! I can feel my life slipping away.

OK, this film is very much my shit.

Double-feature with Clouds of Sils Maria when?

My 19-year-old and I are going to Sentimental Value and I asked the 17-year-old if she wanted to come, too.

“What’s it about?”

“An aging director proposes casting his estranged daughter in his film, but ends up going with a Hollywood actress instead, and it results in—“

“Murder?”

“—feelings.”

No war with Iran! No wars and sanctions! End the blockade on Cuba! End illegal killings, kidnappings, and seizures! End the genocide in Palestine and Sudan! End exterminationist domestic policy!

Im not mad about helping my neighbors

I'm furious about sending money to random venmos and paypals when the state is sitting on billions in surplus and the federal government has money for anything they want.

Yeah, I think there are a ton of feasibility barriers that make this a (practical) non-starter: just a rhetorical cudgel. E.g. “If you don’t support this, you must want to shield abusers/be an abuser yourself.”

I’m sure this is happening elsewhere, too, but it seems like my state’s conservative legislature has been churning out these bills that deploy CSA victims/the specter of CSA as bait for some flimsily-disguised power play and I! Hate! It!

After that Super Bowl commercial about linking Flock and Ring cameras, I saw many comments to the effect of “But we need this to keep domestic violence and stalking victims safe.”

State surveillance will never do that.

In fact: the opposite.

"He seems nice." (stage-whispered by Homer, about insufferable designer Formico [whose name must never be spoken])

and, of course

"My only friends are grown-up nerds like Gore Vidal. And even he's kissed more boys than I ever will."
"Girls, Lisa. Boys kiss girls."

Lisa is 💯here AND:

- repeating false claims w the aim of disproving often only amplifies, even w quality rebuttal
- better to assert values-positive messaging unapologetically than dispute nonsense
- if you think someone is reachable, ask q's rather than move to immediate rebuttal

RIP Tom Noonan, a friend for 18 years. Often typecast as villains, he was an actor's actor, a unique playwright & filmmaker, a gifted composer, and a pianist with a sweet voice. My kids & I used to go to his tiny apartment for dinner (pizza). We'd have a few drinks & he'd start to play. Magic.

Writing is thinking.

It's not some marginal boring task you can skip. It's the heart of it.

My son is a highly anxiety-driven, but eminently capable, first-year college student, who falls back on a kind of stilted-sounding writing style to cope with academic self-doubt and is NOW worried that that'll trip the AI sensors and I don't think he needs this added stress in his life, thanks.

This is a good thread. There is a huge difference between "the court system is still able to provide some positive outcomes in some cases" and "the court system is capable of providing due process and the system is fair."
