Finally, a good use of AI!

To wrap this up, this article is an interesting look into a personality that has always existed, but currently is extremely dominant in a culture that views music as a commodity rather than a conduit for emotion

Say what you want about Billy Joel, but he has waaay more songs than β€œUptown Girl” and β€œScenes From And Italian Restaurant”. Paul Simon’s β€œGraceland” album is great, and it has tracks other than β€œCall Me Al”.

I work in a kitchen that uses Spotify as a music source, and have experienced first hand what their basic algorithm pushes: the idea that an artist has at most 5 songs in their catalog, and relentlessly push them, across all streams.

Geez, I’m sounding douchey now. And I’m trying not to! My relationship with music isn’t superior to anyone else’s. People who consider music to be background sounds or fast fashion aren’t bad people, but they are alien to me. I find it hard to relate.

And I stream! I use Spotify Radio and suggested playlists, I lean on Pandora’s algorithm heavily. But I also get my hands into it as much as I can; doing my best to wrest control from the machine and make it my own.

And that, ultimately, is what streaming offers, on steroids, with a faux-customization aspect that leads a listener to believe they are controlling what they listen to, while a tweaked algorithm pushes a crowd-sourced bell curve at them behind the scenes.

Even in the 70s/80s/90s, there were people like this author who only listened to commercial radio, used Billboard Top 40 as a guide, passively consumed music that was provided to them rather than actively pursued it

This article is honestly disheartening, but it also is revelatory.
I’m GenX, so I’ve lived the vinyl->cassette->CD->Mp3->streaming->back to vinyl circuit; curating a collection both autobiographical and aspirational comes naturally. But I also recognize I’m an outlier in that way as well

The board I was a main part of slowly and silently collapsed, and a dozen or so of the more creative people I’d known for years just faded away. Really quite sad

When Facebook leaned hard into Pivot to Video, making users more passive consumers. This led to the demise of blogs and message boards, where proactive engagement was practically mandatory

Dear lord. I had no idea that gif ended with a bitcoin image.

Mortifying.

I won’t delete it, as this is my penance.

You chose James Brown, and didn’t go with β€œFunky Drummer”.

I mean, go with the non-obvious, but in terms of influence? Srsly

Came across the phrase "cognitive DDOS" to describe our present culture.

Understood instantly what it meant.
