What? A cat book I missed seeing in PW???
This is so exciting! When a particular tuxedo cat walked into our school library, I became a crazy cat book lady.

They sell Tonies that allow voice recordings to be added. Guessing students would love hearing the librarian, custodian, or principal read to them, even when that school celebrity isn’t in the room! Maybe the authors you have Zoomed with too!
(Grandbabies love hearing Grandpa read I AM A TORNADO!)
That cart is looking Scholastic-ish! This gives me hope of finding titles the kids love.
This is a March Madness concept I can get behind! The kids are biased toward THE LIBRARY KITTY, so maybe we can focus on dog books. 🐶
(Our district does an ableist attendance challenge drawing attention to the kids who juggle hospital appts with their schooling. It’s heartbreaking to watch.)
Being an author at a school’s Bookfest, 4 hour library lockdown with a class of my kindergartners, 2 class visits at a different campus, finishing the final edits with my illustrator for Heroes NEED HELP, and a call about our upcoming STEAM book fair.
One of those things was NOT like the others. 😢
New words this week:
Swatting. It’s when an idiot paralyzes a school by making a threatening phone call causing the school to be surrounded by a swat team & have a 4 hour lockdown. The kindergarteners learned “lockdown game” and earned prizes for winning. The idiot learned “felony.” #Skybrarian
A picture book cover. The front section depicts two kids with IV poles with superhero shadows. The back cover includes those kids with four friends and a dog showing that they support the kids in their cancer battle.
World Book Day sounds like an invitation to share our new cover! I love how the front and back cover work together, so I will share it that way. 🙂
HEROES NEED HELP by Jaxon Powell and I, Illustrated by Jason Greco, will be available in May. ❤️

Reading is the foundational skill for all other learning. #parents, it's our responsibility to introduce our kids to the magic of books. 🥰📚💜

I own 100 ISBN numbers. ❤️📚
Illustration of four stylized axolotls playing underwater. One rests gently on the bottom looking at a cute orange copopod. One has a dancing vibe. One is showing the dancing friend a cool plant. One is nuzzling another copopod. The water is green, loose moss floats about. The axolotls are various shades of pink and yellowy beige with bright pink and orange gills. Art by Gina Perry

This year is flying by which is how it's #kidlitartpostcard day again! Illustration of what happens when you have a creative hedgehog as a hair dresser. Author/illustrator. Looking for picture book, chapter, & young graphic novel projects. Rep'd by Elizabeth Bennett, @TransatlanticKidsBooks
Do I dare write a book called THE BEST LIBRARY DAY EVER! addressing lockdowns as a way to stay happy and safe, making it a game kids can win?
As a product of the Kansas tornado lifestyle, I wish teachers approached drills as a preparatory game rather than the destruction of Dorothy’s flying house.
It’s kidlit postcard day! Such a happy scroll during breakfast, dreaming of the day when AcademicPlayBooks.com can afford a 2nd illustrator.

Children's Book Illustration showing a giraffe cabby driver learning out the window of his taxi, pointing at a pile of teetering suitcases that a frog bell hop is carrying. The bell hop looks stressed, carrying suitcases, with bags over one arm, and holding an umbrella over a snooty looking kitten. The kitten is wearing a green peacoat and holding a stuffed mouse in her arms. She has her nose up in the air.
March #kidlitartpostcard day was just begging for a frog illo, so i drew a rather stressed out bell “hop”. 🐸 😁 I hope your day is going better than his!
Open to PB and MG projects.

At the end of a four hour lockdown, a boy cheered, “This was the best day ever!” We played a 30 minute quiet game while we practiced what we would do if there was a mean dog or bad guy trying the sneak in. When we were cleared to make noise, we had unlimited book time, Legos, coloring, and lunch. 🙂
A picture book “Caring” featuring a welcoming tree stump and a boy planting a sapling.
The afternoon librarian gets me! This book was donated yesterday and she saved it after processing in case I hadn’t had a chance to read it yet!
Like the others created by Kobi Yamada, it’s beautiful. Elise Hurst is the perfect illustrator for this message. ❤️

This is a good read, and it’s wonderful to see characters with medical challenges. If we want diverse books medical representation needs to be included. 🏥
Excited to celebrate Read across America Day on Monday with the cover reveal for HEROES NEED HELP, Supporting Kids with Cancer. I love the way Jason Greco’s front and back cover work together, so we will be showcasing both!

This is so true! And it’s why I stopped begging for the industry to champion what I know my students need. Publishers don’t know my kids. I do. So I am going to write what the others don’t — while clinging on by my fingernails. ❤️
white text on a red background, with library and social media logos at the bottom, text - Changes are coming to Hoopla service, Due to a lack of sustainable core library funding from the province and the high cost of maintaining Hoopla, the following modifications are being made to our Hoopla account starting on March 1, 2026: Change in the borrowing limit to 3 per month per patron (instead of the current limit of 5). $3 price cap per item on all content (instead of the current limit of $4). * Please note: The price cap is the cost to the library to borrow the book, not the borrower. The library pays a fee per borrow and we have to limit the cost of the item to $3 or less per borrow. This doesn't impact you as the borrower other than there may be fewer books to choose from. 😊 www.parl.ns.ca

I have spent the last 5 years scanning the PW children’s book announcements. It seems that the KC “first lines” panel was correct. No one in the industry will champion a book about kids with cancer. 😢
If I missed one, please tell me!!!
HEROES NEED HELP will be available in May.

My daughter lost a book called, “Can you Find it?” during the I Spy book craze. She earned the money to pay for it and then found it on her bookshelf a year later. When books get lost, the bookshelf is usually the culprit for my library kiddos too.
The slide show I created for next week’s school visit should be small enough of a file to send to anyone wishing to review THE LIBRARY KITTY. Let me know if that describes you! 🤗
It’s a 2nd grade early reader and has a kindergarten companion book.

They prey on those who are struggling to be seen. Especially those of us who invest our own money to create books of our heart. Without big publishing companies behind us, stores won’t sell our books. Many indies (who tell us to buy local) won’t even consider doing so themselves. Scams offer help. 😢
We have students who aren’t allowed to celebrate holidays, visiting the library during their class parties. Wanting to support them has encouraged us to be educationally holiday adjacent in our themes. 🙂
