Together, our findings suggest that social context and hierarchy shape reward processing in ways that extend beyond competition & continue to influence how the brain responds to reward, even when no one else is around.

What surprised us most was that social rank effects on neural activity were strongest when mice received awards ALONE, not during competition.
We also found that dominant and subordinate mice showed distinct activation patterns across prefrontal and subcortical regions.

When mice were alone, we saw widespread coordination across prefrontal & subcortical regions. But in social contexts, whether competitive or not, these network correlations largely disappeared. This suggests that social context fundamentally reorganizes how these circuits talk to each other!

We compared mice receiving rewards in three contexts: alone, with a cagemate (non-competitive), or competing for the same reward. Surprisingly, the non-competitive social context drove the highest overall brain activation across regions.

(1/6) We have a new paper out in #eNeuro!
How does the brainβs reward processing change across social contexts? We mapped brain activity (cFos) & found that social context reshapes how reward circuits are coordinatedππ
