I've often wondered about this w/r/t paleolithic cave art. Were caves special in some way (which seems an appropriate thing to conclude!) and/or were there paintings all over everything and only those in caves survived?

These are kihikihi or moorish idols (Zanclus cornutus). They're cool for a bunch of reasons but one of them is that they're the only species in their family and they can be found basically everywhere in the Indo-Pacific except the Red Sea.

I grew up almost literally on the banks of the San Lorenzo.
Now I live in a place without really any rivers to speak of, tho Waolani stream goes right under my living room window and with all the rain we’ve had lately it’s not far from qualifying as a river.

Oh dang we saw something similar to this from submersible dives in Tuvalu in May.
