But it was interesting because my ex-supervisor had all of these odd jokes about Ukrainians, like their purported fondness of bowling. Despite the fact that the movie deliberately mixed up Lemkos, Ukrainians and Russians I think a lot of the stereotypes must have come from this movie, given his age.

I actually watched this movie last week, just because Western depictions of slavic diaspora are interesting for me. I did not have high hopes, and even then I was let down. Archetypal: "Americans will kill you, and then make a movie about how killing you made them sad." + racial/sex stereotypes.
